    Default Older 3GS: iTunes won't let it restore/upgrade to 3.1.2 from 3.0.1
I thought this would be pretty straight forward.

My friend's 3GS is the older model (before the new bootrom problem)
He still has it unlocked with the 3.0.1 firmware which, for some reason, won't keep his text messages (they disappear after he reads them)

SO I said I would upgrade him to 3.1.2 and use blackra1n to JB/unlock as I had with mine.

I downloaded the firmware from this modmyi website in the downloads section for his model iPhone.

On his mac in iTunes I "Option Clicked" the restore button to navigate to the firmware and let iTunes do it's thing. I get a message saying iTunes will not restore to "this Build" and it quits the process.

Am I using the wrong firmware? iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw

Should I be sourcing this firmware somewhere else?

    Suggestions would be appreciated
    Thanks

Well for it to work he had to have his 3.1.2 SHSH stored in Cydia and have altered the iTunes host file to bypass Apple's firmware verification check by pointing it to Saurik's server.. An easier way for you to upgrade is to simply download a custom 3.1.2 firmware from google and then Shift/Restore in iTunes. The custom firmwares do not require the verification process. If the phone is still jailbroken that is the way I would go.

You're kinda lucky it didn't work. Now you get to know about custom firmwares. One good thing (out of many) about CFWs is that they preserve your baseband and as you're coming from 3.0.x you have BB 04.26.08 which is unlockable by the bug free ultrasn0w unlocking tool, as opposed to blacksn0w which can cause wifi and boot loop problems.
