Default HELP! Trying to jailbreak / unlock
    Having a problem...

A friend gave me a 8 gig 3G that they bought a year or so ago. It was only used for a couple weeks and she didn't like it, so she bought something else and just threw it in a drawer and forgot about it. She found it the other day and gave it to me, but she reset it first (in the settings menu). I'm trying to jailbreak and unlock it (using Blackra1n), which I've done before, on a brand new 3gs, but this one isn't working. It's telling me to connect to itunes, but itunes is saying it needs restored before it can be used with itunes. I don't want to restore to the newest firmware because I need it to work with T-Mobile...

can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks.

Unfortunately...I don't know. The screen has the "slide for emergency" slider on it.

Then all you have to do is activate it then, you can use a prepaid sim to do that. Unless you want to use on an unofficial carrier.

Can I use another AT&T sim? Someone else's AT&T sim that works in their phone?

What do you mean by "unofficial carrier"? I use T-Mobile..

Yes, any AT&T sim, I have actually even used an old AT&T sim I found in an old phone to activate it, but of coarse it will only work on AT&T then.
You need to jailbreak and unlock to use it on T-Mo.
Here is a link to some guides.
I suggest you download 3.1.2 firmware, do a "hold shift key and click restore", point to the 3.1.2 firmware and the use blackra1n to jailbreak and blacksn0w to unlock.

Is there a way to activate without using AT&T since I'm unlocking for T-Mobile anyway?

Thanks guys...I'll give it a shot. You're the best!

Yep. Try running blackra1n or redsn0w 0.9.3 on it right now. They will hacktivate it, which will give you access to the springboard. Then look up how to unlock with blacksn0w.

^ that would work, but not knowing what firmware he is on may be a problem with either jailbreak method.

I'm pretty sure it's running 2.2.1....almost positive. I know it hasn't been upgraded it quite a while. It's definitely 2.something. The problem is, the screen shows the "connect to itunes picture" and the slider is "slide for emergency", and it has a "no sim card installed" warning. And I'm having no luck with the "DFU mode" thing.

DFU mode will be a black blank screen.
    DFU mode
    INSTRUCTIONS
    Step 1. Turn off iPhone
Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.
Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.
Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that it detects iPhone in restore/recovery mode.

    Alternative method.
Step 1. While the device is on, hold down the Sleep / Wake and Home buttons for exactly 10 seconds, the device will restart.
Step 2. Release the Sleep / Wake button, but keep holding down the Home button for another 10 seconds.
Step 3. Release the Home button.

OK...how do I restore to 3.1.2? I downloaded the file from the link you posted, but when I shift/click "restore" in itunes, it's looking for .ipsw files. It's not seeing what I downloaded.

the firmware that you downloaded, what is the extension? is it .ipsw or .zip? if .zip, right click on it and rename it to .ipsw and then try.

    Yeah, yeah...I know.

Internet Explorer was turning it into a folder instead of a file. I downloaded Firefox & it worked correctly...ipsw file. It's restoring to that file now. I'll try Blackra1n / Blacksn0w as soon as it's done.

All done...everything went pretty easily. Restored to 3.1.2, unlock & jailbreak with blackweather. Thanks everyone!
