Default Does Firmware version effect reception?
    I am running a jailbroken 2G iphone with 2.2.1

Anyway I've noticed recently a sharp decrease in my reception. Places I've been getting 5 bars I'm lucky if I get 2. I drop calls in places that used to be fine and I'm having trouble getting reception in the middle of Los Angeles. I've been reluctant to upgrade because I don't feel like setting up all of my jailbroken apps again, but the reception is making my phone useless. I've noticed that it sometimes get reception in these places, but manages to completely loose it without me even touching it.

TL;DR: Should running an older jailbroken firmware (2.2.1) effect my phone's reception on the ATT network?

The only thing that effects reception is modem firmware (baseband). The 2G iPhone has not had a baseband update in well over a year so you should not notice any change in signal from one firmware to another. I would suggest you upgrade to 3.1.2 though and maybe by luck it'll improve things. You should just be able to restore in iTunes to 3.1.2 and use blackra1n to jailbreak.
