Default Will upgrading to 3.1.2 require reactivation? I'm a non-iphone ATT customer.
my phone: 3G on ATT (no iphone plan, just unlimited data with text) running 3.0, no jailbreak or unlock. i bought it already activated, so didn't need to go through the process.

I'm on ATT but not on the iPhone plan, so I don't need to unlock but I can't active using iTunes. I've used previous jailbreaks to hacktivate (when I had my 2G) but purplera1n doesn't include hacktivation. If I upgrade (not restore) to 3.1.2 will my phone go back to activation mode?

Also, I'm a bit confused if purplera1n works for both 3G and 3GS or just 3GS? I found a website that explains how to hacktivate but all the directions are focused on 3GS with not confirmation that it will work for 3G too.

    Thanks for any help!

The only way to go is pwnage tool at the moment which will hacktiave your device. Unless you are down below 3.0 I wouldn't suggest upgrading at all. 3.0 works just as well or better than 3.0.1 or 3.1 or 3.1.2.

ok, i'll stick with 3.0 for now. thanks for the quick reply.

what do you think of this?

Download Custom Firmware 3.1.2 – Jailbreak, Activate, Unlock iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS [Mac and Windows] | iLikeMyiPhone

they have custom 3.1.2 firmware for 3G. i was thinking to download and restore to:

iPhone 3G 3.1.2 Custom Firmware Activated for Other Carriers Part 1 and 2

I assume the firmware leaves the old baseband for unlocking while also hacktivating. since i'm on att i dont' need to unlock but i need the hacktivate which it already has.

    a good idea?
