Default Upgrading already jail broken iphone 3g
I have an iphone 3g running firmware version 2.2.1 that I jail broke with quickpwn a while ago when I first got the phone

I installed many apps such as bite sms (to hide my sms previews) , swirly mms ( to receive and send mms) ibluetooth ( to send files to other people with blue tooth) winterboard (for a custom background) and a few other apps only available to those with a jailbroken iphone.

Since then I believe there is a new firmware available from mac witch is far better than 2.2.1

I have friends with non-jailbroken iphones who are able to send and receive mms, copy and paste, and use mac approved apps that arenít supported by the 2.2.1 firmware.

So, I want to upgrade to the latest firmware (3.0 I think or is it 3.1 now?)

What is the best way to go about this? I assume I should restore the phone threw I tunes then upgrade to the latest firmware then re jailbreak? Or should I not restore and just select to upgrade firmware?

Will I loose my contacts etc or is this backed up by itunes and resynced or restore?

Will I loose all my previous apps from cydia etc?

Should I use quickpwn to do the jailbreak or another application?

Is redsnow, ultrasnow and yellow snow for unlocking the phone to use sims from different service providers? Or are these other jailbreak programs. I am with optus and only use the sim card the phone came with.

I have both mac and pc with itunes available to use.

    ok, here's the deal:
the current firmware is 3.1, which can be jailbroken for the 3G. but you need access to a mac in order to do it. the program you jailbreak with is PwnageTool, which is only available on a mac. PwnageTool takes the official 3.1 firmware from apple and creates a custom firmware file for you, that is jailbroken and (if you wish) activated and unlocked.

Since you use the official sim, you don't need the activation and unlock option, but still it gives you the jailbreak. when it created your custom firmware, you just restore to that firmware via itunes (hold alt+click restore on a mac, or hold shift and click restore on windows, which allows you to chose a firmware file. you then chose the custom firmware).

itunes backs up all official stuff, which means contacts, calendar, sms, notes etc.
jailbreak stuff will be lost during the process. there are backup solutions available in cydia, but I don't know much about them. But be aware that it's possible not everything you used to use is available on 3.0 (a lot of stuff won't even be needed!).

you can also wait for the next release of redsn0w, which will allow you to jailbreak under windows (and, if you only want the JB, is maybe a little easier than pwnagetool, though pwangetool isn't that complicated).

ultrasn0w, yell0wsnow etc. are all unlock apps, but pwnagetool does the unlocking anyway if you want it to.

edit: an excellent tutorial on how to do it:
