    Default mod help please?
Can someone plz provide me w/ a link to a "how to" on how to upgrade my 1st gen iPhone- 1.1.4 to 2.2 firmware? I've downloaded the firmware, but am not sure how to install it on my phone. I will figure out the J/B and unlock afterwards.

    THX!

    Plug your phone into itunes.

Hold down the "shift" key and press "restore", it will open a window and allow you to choose the firmware file. Restore.

Here is a link to firmware files.

Why are you downgrading to 2.2. I thought you were on 3.0.1 yesterday?

woah, that's pretty old but why go to 2.2? go to 3.0.1 straight, or rather wait some days and go to 3.1

after, the shift/restore the file for 2.2 shows that it is empty? There are diff paths: .fseventsd and firmware>all flash or >dfu ... all of these files appear empty when clicking on them. ?? Do I need to unzip this file first somehow??

No you shouldn't have to unzip it. It should have an .ipsw extension. Does it?

I should add that using firefox works much better for these types of files.

nope not me for sure, I told you to go to 3.0, and yes 3.0 and 3.0.1 can be jailbroken.

so what is the file extension that you are seeing on the formware?

the last file in the zip is all_flash.m68ap.production
None of the files have the .ipsw extension ?? that's why it is showing all the folders empty. I downloaded firefox and changed it to my default, but that didn't change anything.
*the file I downloaded is a .zip file. I do not see any other file extensions

    Actually, downgrading is an option.

    1) Quit iTunes.

    2) Delete iTunes from your Applications folder.

    3) Go to your ~/Music/iTunes folder. Delete or rename the "iTunes Library" file.

    4) Open the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and look for the backup of your old pre-9 library; it should be dated at about the time you first ran iTunes 9. Copy it back out to the ~/Music/iTunes folder, and rename it to "iTunes Library".

    6) Go to <http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes_8_2_1> and download iTunes 8.2.1. The page says it's for G3, but the Read Me file says it'll run on G4, G5, and Intel too. Open the diskimage and run the installer.

You should now be able to run iTunes 8.2.1 again.

aha, may be part of your problem.

XP or Vista. you need to open "My Computer"
XP - go to the top menu and select options > Folder Options
Vista - Top left button that says Organize > Folder and Search Options
In that window you need to click the " VIEW " tab on top.
NEED TO SELECT “SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS "
Then unclick the option to " hide protected operating system files "
Once that's done click "apply" then ok and exit out of the window.
    Then go to this dir
    users > "USERNAME" > appdata > roaming > apple computer > iTunes >
and the folder holding the downloaded file will be there.
Upgrade = click upgrade in iTunes
Clean restore = Click restore in iTunes and not restore from backup
Upgrading a major version needs a clean restore. Upgrading a minor version should be OK with an upgrade.
Same goes for backups - do not restore from a backup made in a FW with a major change but minor changes are fine.
A number change is major and a decimal change (e.g. 3.0 -> 3.1) is minor.

Dude, your making me work hard here. J
Just another reason why it is important to have your user info, when your done with all this go to your User Control Panel and complete the info, will make it easier for all of us.

If you haven't noticed...I'm only semi "computer literate" at best. I looked in my music folder, I do not have an itunes file. Is it necessary to downgrade to have 3.0 firmware? That's all I really need.

I don't think so, i think your problem is not seeing the firmware files. Follow the instructions I posted above about Vista.
