XP or Vista. you need to open "My Computer"
XP - go to the top menu and select options > Folder Options
Vista - Top left button that says Organize > Folder and Search Options
In that window you need to click the " VIEW " tab on top.
NEED TO SELECT “SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS "
Then unclick the option to " hide protected operating system files "
Once that's done click "apply" then ok and exit out of the window.
    Then go to this dir
    users > "USERNAME" > appdata > roaming > apple computer > iTunes >
and the folder holding the downloaded file will be there.
Upgrade = click upgrade in iTunes
Clean restore = Click restore in iTunes and not restore from backup
Upgrading a major version needs a clean restore. Upgrading a minor version should be OK with an upgrade.
Same goes for backups - do not restore from a backup made in a FW with a major change but minor changes are fine.
A number change is major and a decimal change (e.g. 3.0 -> 3.1) is minor.

Dude, your making me work hard here. J
Just another reason why it is important to have your user info, when your done with all this go to your User Control Panel and complete the info, will make it easier for all of us.
I made it to upgrade, then u lost me. ?? If I update in itunes9 it will upgrade me to 3.1 automatically. What am I missing? Sorry!

I'm really not this dumb, seriously. lol
I followed the steps you gave me for Vista. Same problem basically. I can't find the file. I looked in the EXACT path you told me to. Only itunes plug-ins is the only folder in the itunes file. ??

I'm confused also, do you have access to another machine, not a vista machine?

Sometimes vista removes the extension, Are you seeing a file that is
iPhone1,1_3.0_70A341_Restore.ipsw it may not have the .ipsw ext, if you can search for this file without the .ipsw ext and if you find it just add the extension.

as posted in #26 do a start/search and search for the firmware file without the extension of .ipsw see if you can locate it in your computer. All were doing now is trying to find the firmware you downloaded.

I can find the .zip file in the username>documents file, same as above... but that's it. I used the start/search..nothing. Any specific kewords I should search for that file? I also looked in program files. The only files in the path u told me are a CIDB file and a XML doc, and plug-ins

prob another dbl post. srry. The red snow-win.zip file is the only one. I obv do not need the mac file. But, there is no .exe file? If I click on the .zip= command propmpt window flashes. That's it. Nothing about that in the vid tutorial. Srry. Do I need to rename this file also???

Nope, it is indeed a zip file. Here go to this link and get redsn0w 8, you will need the 3.0 .ipsw file from before also. you will need 2 bootloader files (3.9 & 4.6) Download those also. Then you can use the guide from iClarified if needed but redsn0w has a tutorial with it.

There are a ton of videos on You Tube about jailbreaking but it is really easy. You'll see one you get started. Redsn0w tells you step by step what to do.

OMG...sigh. Same prob with that file. Command prompt flashes then disappears. There is no .exe file to run. I watched and read a few tutorials. None of them refer to this problem. ???

    Are you using firefox?
You really need to get on a different machine to be honest. You'll be pulling your hair out for ever like this.
Your not alone believe me, tons of people have had this problem. Get rid of Vista when you can also, sux................

A few posts back I explained on how you can show files with vista, did you do that>
