    Default advice for newbie please
Hi I have just found my old 3g which has been unused since I got my 3g a year ago. I decided to update it to 3.0, then unlock it. When I tried to update it it went into emergency call only mode and said to insert a valid sim.

I then put my current o2 sim in and it then asks me to activate the phone which I assume will mess up my 3g set up.

I then tried to restore but it does the same.

I then came across this site and tried to restore in dfu mode. it goes through the motions then does the same.

Should I jailbreak before I update or am I doing something else wrong? Any advice greatfully recieved.

Right, I have just read the thread 'Unlocking 2G iphone without SIM and Activation' which is basically the same as my problem. The problem I have is that when you click restore it says restore and upgrade, but it doesn't give me the option to choose which update version it uses. Is there something I'm not doing at this stage please?

It will depend on what version of iTunes you are using.

You need to run the jailbreak after the restore. The jailbreak will hacktivate it.

its itunes 8.2.0.23. Am I correct in thinking that I need to hold down shift when I click restore to choose the fw version?

you dont have to hold down anything. Just restore it and you will end up with the emergency screen. Then run redsn0w to jailbreak and activate it

Thanks. Right, I have gone back to the beginning, and powered the iphone off. then hold the home button while plugging in, and itunes detected iphone in restore mode. I clicked restore then it says restore and update and i clicked ok. its now going through the motions. I'll run redsn0w when its finished and keep my fingers crossed!!!! Thanks for the help. (sorry, it is version 3.0 it will be being updated to, i think, is that right?)

looks like it worked!!! says flashing bootloader do not interrupt. Just a quick query, it says that I must neuter to unlock, and I'm not sure what that entails. What do I need to do, please?

    YOU'RE ALL BRILLIANT.

I now have a fully working updated iphone. Thanks again. Just need to neuter it now!!! (Sounds painful)
