If you don't care to unlock, Quickpwn is best way.
If you're unlocked or ever want to unlock.
Then you'll have to find a custom firmware, so your baseband doesn't get upgraded.

    Hope this helps .........

I have just bought a 3G 2.2.1 iphone and am considring jailbreaking it. (I have had 2G jailbroken Iphones in the past) I am just concerned that if something does go wrong or I want to restore to the apple factory settings. Can I just do a restore in Itunes to make it legit again?
    Thanks
    Ian

Yes, a restore in iTunes will put back to factory settings.
