I think it was the most popular firmware because it was incredibly easy to jailbreak (jailbreakme.com). 1.1.1 has also been around longer then the more current firmwares (.2, .3, .4), meaning it has more downloads.

All of the firmwares for the iPhone and iPod touch are available here:

Oh, and the iPhone 1.1.4 firmware is number 8 on the most downloaded =D

@Dash 2, 1.1.1 is EXTREMELY easy for jailbreaking,ONLY FOR THISE WHO HAVE WIFI at home,otherwise-how do you jailbreak it? Meanwhile-why do you think people will download firmware from the download section, instead of downloading it from iTunes?))

If you have a new iPod or iPhone you don't need to download the firmware. Just update it to 1.1.4 and you can jailbreak it using different methods.

The following site is the one i used and was the easiest - aplace2blog.com
