    Why can't it find cd?

Looks like your Terminal is broken.

easiest method ever; install new source / http://i.unlock.no / in installer. and you'll find virginizer right in installer. careful there are two; one for 1.0.2 and other one for 1.1.1 firware. i did it and it works great.

What does that have to do with the Terminal application on his computer?

Had a similar issue whilst virginizing a friends phone.

I think the answer to your original question, if it's still required, is to install "Community Sources", and "BSD Subsystem" on the iPhone using Installer.app.
