Thread: 12 Procedures for a full upgrade to 1.1.1 [OSX]

  1. #1
Default 12 Procedures for a full upgrade to 1.1.1 [OSX]
    Howdy all,

I didn’t know where to post this because it’s a ‘Full’ upgrade process. So feel free to move it to the appropriate spot in the forum if I got it wrong.

On Saturday October 27th I decided to upgrade my 1.0.2 Phone to 1.1.1. During the process I managed to turn my Phone into a shiny Brick. It was a pretty brick and made one heck of a paperweight. I followed all the tutorials I could find to turn my “iRock” into a usable phone again. I finally had success the following Wednesday (October 31st), but that wasn’t without jumping through all kinds of iHoops. It took a LOT of reading and searching and more reading until I figured it out. (Which is what you SHOULD do before you attempt any upgrades to your Phone).

With that said, I wanted to post the processes I followed along with notes I made about getting through errors that came up during the upgrade. I hope this will provide some light at the end of the tunnel for anyone running into the same problems I did (which can be difficult to find the answers to sometimes). Also, I wanted to give back anything I could to this wonderful site.

To start with if you upgraded your 1.0.2 Phone (Originally unlocked using ‘anySIM’ or ‘iUnlock’) to 1.1.1 and now it’s an ‘iBrick’. And you are using an Intel Macintosh (AKA ‘MacIntel’) or ‘Hackintosh’ running OS X 10.4.10, these procedures are for you.

    Here goes…

    Disclaimer:
This has been said over and over on this forum. There is one underlying truth to these tutorials that NEEDS to be understood…..
If you get an error or the screenshot in the tutorial doesn’t match your screen, DO NOT CONTINUE WITH THE PROCESS. STOP AND LOOK FOR THE ANSWERS ON THE FORUM, OR ASK A QUESTION IF YOU CAN’T FIND IT. It is also VERY important you follow every step in the procedures to a “T”. I didn’t follow the screenshots and I made a shiny ‘1.1.1 brick’ because of it. Hopefully the steps I took along with the notes will keep this from happening to you. The ‘Process Notes:’ are notes I made for each procedure. The ‘Steps’ are notes I made about that particular step in that particular procedure. Finally, I did not write the procedures linked in this list, it’s simply a compilation of all the procedures I followed to get the job done.

First things first: All the steps I took were done on a ‘Hackintosh’ running OS X 10.4.10 and the latest iTunes (at the time) 7.4.2. At the time of this writing Apple just released iTunes 7.5 which should NOT be used as iNdependence doesn’t work. Sorry PC users, I have a PC too but I wanted my Phone on a Mac.

Before I started: My Phone was upgraded to 1.1.1, un-activated, Jailed and locked (the perfect recipe for a Brick). Before that my Phone was working great with 1.0.2 firmware, Activated, Jail-broken and Unlocked with ‘iUnlock’ using a T-Mobile SIM. By mistake I upgraded to 1.1.1 because I didn’t follow the steps properly.

Here we go… 12 Procedures to upgrading your phone properly

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Procedure #1 - Downgrade Phone 1.1.1 to firmware 1.0.2
    http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/Dow...firmware_1.0.2
This step should be obvious as it will downgrade the 1.1.1 firmware to 1.0.2

    Process Notes:
Step 2:When you hold down the ‘Sleep/Wake’ and ‘Home’ buttons wait for the iTunes logo and USB cable to come up (or ‘1.1.1 Restore Mode’). I was not able to get to a point where there is ‘Nothing’ on the Phone’s screen as the instructions point out.

Step 3: On a ‘Hackintosh’ the Option button is the ALT button on the PC keyboard. Keep holding ALT (On a Hackintosh) or Option (On a Mac) after clicking ‘Restore’ until the window pops up for the requested file.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Procedure #2 - Downgrade Baseband 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 OSX
    http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/Dow...1_to_1.0.2_OSX
This step is necessary as it reverts the 1.1.1 Baseband of the Phone back to a factory 1.0.2 Phone. (Keep in mind I said the ‘Baseband’ of the Phone) This step is crucial if you want further tutorials to work. Don’t mistake this for ‘Virginizing’ either, it’s totally different.

    Process Notes:
Step 4: Always install the version of iNdependence the procedure uses. Don’t use the same version for all the tutorials.

Step 9: At the end of Step 9 you should see this: # If you get this: -sh-3.2# then you installed SSH from iNdependence and Installer App. Both installed will not work, so uninstall SSH from iNdependence and re-install through Installer App. (You may have to re-install ‘BSD Subsystem’ as well)

Step 10: 'ieraser' in the Archive didn't work for me, I used 'ieraser2' found here: http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/2007/08/step-7.html You’ll find out if you have the right file when you get to the point you type in ‘ieraser’. If you get ‘Waiting for Data…’ and nothing happens you have the wrong file.

Step 17 & 18: I skipped these steps and continued on to the next tutorial.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Procedure #3 - Downgrade 1.0.2 baseband OS X iPhone (Virginize)
    http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/Dow...nd_OS_X_iPhone
This process is necessary to fix the corrupt ‘Seczone’ on the Phone and downgrade the Baseband one more time. This is ‘Virginizing’

    Process Notes:
Step 2a: If you get an ‘Incorrect Password’ error, type exit and hit enter, then quit Terminal and restart it. You may have to restart the computer before it will work.

Step 2b: Make sure you get this: # instead of this: -sh-3.2# (Remember the SSH thing?).

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Procedure #4 - IPhone unlock OS X Part 2
    http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/IPh...ck_OS_X_Part_2
This will Activate’ and ‘Jailbreak’ the Phone.

    Process Notes:
Step 1: Again, install this version of iNdependence

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Procedure #5 - Upgrading 1.0.2 iPhone to 1.1.1
    http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/Upg...Phone_to_1.1.1
Again, this is obvious. Upgrading to 1.1.1.

    Process Notes:
Step 1: Again, install this version of iNdependence.

Step 2: Make sure you close iNdependence before clicking ‘Update’ through iTunes. If not you will get an error at the end of the update. You can click update in iTunes again and recover.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Procedure #6 - Dev Team Jailbreak 1.1.1 OSX
    http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/Dev...reak_1.1.1_OSX
This procedure is necessary to get the 1.1.1 firmware ‘Jailbroken’ through iNdependence. If you don’t go through this step you will get an error in the next procedure that looks like this: ‘Cannot write to rdisk0s1’. Follow this procedure from Step 7 (You should already have 1.1.1 installed by now.)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Procedure #7 - Preparing to mod 1.1.1 iPhone
    http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/Pre...d_1.1.1_iPhone
This procedure will actually ‘Jailbreak’ the Phone and allow it to have 3rd Party Apps installed. This is necessary to get ‘anySIM’ installed on the phone in the next procedure.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Procedure #8 - Unlocking the 1.1.1 iPhone anySIM – Step 1 (Install anySIM 1.1)
    http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/Unl..._iPhone_anySIM
Simple, ‘Unlock’ the phone so you can put any SIM card in the phone and make calls.

    Process Notes:
Step 1 [Beginning]: Download ‘anySIM 1.1p’ from this source: http://modmyi.com/forums/downloads.php?do=cat&id=16
Don’t use ‘anySIM 1.1’ found in the procedure.

Step 1 [End]: When powering the phone up at the end of Step 1, I did not see ‘anySIM’ or ‘Installer.App’ on the phone. Pause at step 2 and go to the next Procedure.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Procedure #9 – ‘Jailbreakme’
    http://jailbreakme.com
Get on the Phone, make sure Wifi is turned on and open ‘Safari’. Go to: http://jailbreakme.com scroll down and click ‘Install AppSnapp’. You should see a progress bar move across. It may look like it’s not working but it will install. If it takes a long time you can close by hitting the ‘Home’ button. Restart the Phone. You may or may not see ‘anySIM’ and ‘Installer’ icons on the home screen. If you do, move on to the next Procedure. If you don’t, retry ‘Jailbreakme’. Make sure you restart the phone after.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Procedure #10 - Unlocking the 1.1.1 iPhone anySIM – Step 2 (Unlock the iPhone)
    http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/Unl..._iPhone_anySIM
Now we can continue to Step 2, Unlocking the Phone with ‘anySIM 1.1p’

    Process Notes:
Step 2: Before I ran ‘anySIM’ I removed the factory AT&T SIM card and left it out during the whole procedure. Once I got to the end I turned the Phone off and then powered back on. Then I inserted my ‘T-Mobile’ SIM. The bars appeared without a logo, but as soon as I made a call the ‘T-Mobile’ logo popped right up.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Procedure #11 – 300MBKiller: Get rid of the 300MB problem with iTunes
    http://code.google.com/p/independence/downloads/list
If you are left with only 300MB available on the Phone this is the fix:
    1) Make sure the Phone is connected to the computer and iTunes is NOT running.
    2) Download ‘300MBKiller.dmg’ to your desktop. (Above Link)
    3) Run it by double-clicking on it.
    4) You will see a message a few seconds later that says something like “Success, you now have 8gb available”. (I don’t remember exactly what it says, but you will know if it worked)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Procedure #12 – Clean up
You can now get rid of ‘anySIM’ from the Phone. I used ‘Cyberduck’ and deleted the ‘AnySim App’ from the ‘Applications’ folder. Just follow the ‘Cyberduck’ login procedure from the ‘Virginize’ Tutorial. (Procedure #3 in this document)

THAT’S IT!!! You’re done! Enjoy your ‘Activated’, Jailbroken’ and ‘Unlocked’ 1.1.1 Phone.

    Sincerely
    Wudstock

My pleasure, I hoped someone could benefit from this. Did you run through all of these and now have the Phone working?

    Default Downloading older firmware
    alsahher,
go to this link, you can download the 1.1.1 firmware from there (Thanks to Poetic Folley, and just in time I think):

    http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/IPh...Download_Links

You will need to update holding the 'Option/ALT' button instead of letting iTunes update automatically.

Sorry, I didn't see the second part of your issue. The 'Install AppSnapp' thing was the only part of the proccess I had trouble with. Make sure you scroll all the way down to the bottom once you get to the AppSnapp site. I saw the Install line on mine, so I don't know what happened there. They have been working on this prog lately to Jailbreak 1.1.2, so you may have better luck asking in the forums about this

    Hope this helps.

You can upgrade to 1.1.2 only after you have 1.1.1 installed and working. At this point I don't think there is a way to 'Unlock' a 1.1.2 Phone yet (Use with anything other than AT&T), so I don't know if I would do that yet. Have you asked on the forums yet about the 'AppSnapp' issue your having?
