Thread: Can a IPhone 3g 8G still be jailbroken?

Default Can a IPhone 3g 8G still be jailbroken?
Looks like a I did something stupid and had a brain fart and updated my iPhone 3G to the newest software. Still kicking myself about doing this!
Now my phone is running 4.2.1
I have tried a few different options to get my jailbreak back
Because this phone is a older one I'm starting to think that I'm dead in the water and will be unable to jailbreak it again.
I started with Jailbreakme.com that's how I did it last time. But not this time said Not supported on iPhone 3g
I have tried was using sn0wbreeze. Everything looked like it was going to work until the install was finished Cydia was a white icon on my springboard and would just crash when I opened it. When I would flip pages on my screen it looked like I had 3 screens over lapping all running at the same time.

    Any thoughts?

retry it with snowbreeze again. your jb is prob untethered so meaning that you have to kick it into booting everytime true your mac or pc . the whit cydia icon just means you have to kick it into booting. look up redsnow. there is a way to shut your iphone of and have it starting again jailbroken ( becaus otherwice it won't even start up stuck at apple logo)
this time your cydia icon will be fine

All 3G are untethered for life. I would suggest downgrading to 3.1.3

I agree with him. 3.1.3 is much more usable then 4.2.1 on 3G

Greenpois0n doesn't work on iPhone 3G. You have a few options. If you'd like to stay on 4.2.1 use redsn0w to jailbreak. If you want to take others' advice and downgrade to 3.1.x, simply get a stock 3.1.x fw and shift+restore to it in iTunes. Then you can jailbreak with Spirit or redsn0w 0.9.4 (if on either 3.1.2 or 3.1.3, both uses the 3.1.2 ipsw). The new jailbreakme.com is for 4.3.3 so I don't think that's an option any longer.

How hard is it to go back to 3.1.3? Without turning my phone into a paperweight.
If I used redsn0w is it cool to use the newest version? If not what version should I use?

It's allows by Apple for an iPhone 3G to restore to 3.1.x without a problem. Do a standard shift+restore to stock 3.1.x as I had instructed previously and that's all you have to do to get the phone back to 3.1.x.

    Hello,

Do you still have multitasking capability with 3.1.3?

+1. backgrounder+multifl0w is probably a better multitasking system than the native one.

    Thank you all,

I will look into downgrading. My only problem with 4.2.1 on the 3G is, whenever I click on a link in Mail, it locks up and Springboard relaunches into safe mode. I have uninstalled any themes that I had added. That did not help.

It's probably more of something to do with what you could have installed in Cydia that my cause conflict or is not compatible with the firmware version. Themes don't have that type of effect.

I'm on a roll now seems that my version of itunes is to new it's version 10.2.0.32. I get a error saying that I was putting a older version of firmware on my phone and it stopped.
And I don't think you and go to a older version of Itunes unless I uninstall the one I have. Or am I wrong with that thinking?

I don't know if that's the case but if you believe so, then yes you need to completely uninstall iTunes before trying to install another older version

I dont believe Spirit requires any DFU mode. It does require the iPhone's official carrier's SIM to activate with though. It seems like you do so it isn't a problem.

You can just do a downgrade to an original 3.1.3 firmware (you can find it in the Downloads section here on MMi). Just open iTunes and hold shift, click restore, and select the 3.1.3 firmware/ipsw. iTunes will probably give you error 1015 so all you have to do is download TinyUmbrella, open it, and click "exit recovery" and it'll kick your phone back up. Then you should be good to go. Just activate in iTunes. If you want to jailbreak, go ahead and run spirit on it. Spirit is pretty easy and straightforward.

Edit: btw you don't need to jailbreak to downgrade your iPhone. Just throwing it our there in case you wanted to try it out.
