Every time I've ever used a non-Apple brand it works for a split second and then the screen goes black. There is actually a hardware chip inside the authentic cable that allows external video. No way to fake that.

so the chip in the cable would tell the phone that the cable is authentic then? isn't that just a restriction or a permission? (i'm not very computer literate sorry if its a dumb ?)

the weird thing is my old cable worked on 2.2

I've never gotten a 3rd party cable to work ever so you're one step ahead of me I guess.

Non of my 3rd party cables work with 3.0, but all work with 2.2.1.

Do you have a link to the youtube mod video?

    Hi ppl,

I have come across this prob as well. What apple have done on the sly with the 3.0 software is to reduce the use of 3rd party cables and make you buy their own cable is, put a chip in the cable that makes the iphone recognise the Apple Composite AV Cable to allow the video to be sent to your TV.

    Very annoying and cheeky!

The youtube vid fails to show the "work around" method used.

Anybody know what this work around hack is ?

    From User "andrazek "
"Ok I've found a solution for this cable to work with OS 3.0, but you need a jailbroken iPhone 3G (more info about jailbreak: Dev-Team Blog ).
So what you need to do:

    1. download file: 2shared - download iapd

    2. ssh to your device and browse to:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/IAP.fr amework/Support

    3. replace existing iapd in this folder with downloaded-one

    4. set file attributes (CHMOD) to 755

    5. reboot the device

NOW TRY AND BE HAPPY CUZ IT WORKS! "

    awesome to hear it works

i'm going to be testing it out on a 2G iphone soon when i have access to wifi

    I have a jailbroken iphone 3g, running 3.0.

this fix does not work. It seems to disable the annoying popup messages, which in itself is a good thing, but the video playback pauses by itself every few seconds or so; which effectively makes watching any kind of video-out too cumbersome to do.

    Audio-out works though.

There Must be a workaround for this out there! It makes me sick to think I have to shell out ANOTHER FIFTY bucks for a proprietary CABLE from Apple!

i agree with you there. it's garbage that they try to force us to pay 10x what the crap is worth cause it has an apple logo.

i've seen some people get it to work, and some say the same as you - that it disabled the pop ups. so i dunno whats going on

Yet another reason why I hate Apple. I really and truely do! Love the hell out of my iPhone though.

alright so i can't get this to work.

in the video, it says you need to "set file attributes (CHMOD) to 755". how do i do that?

hi guys, i posted the original vid on youtube, however my 3GS went south and i had to update it to 3.0.1 firmware to fix it. i managed to downgrade back to 3.0 but the cables no longer work again. so avoid upgrading if you can. thei work around does not work with 3.0.1

DO NOT UPDATE TO 3.0.1 Firmware

as far as some people not having the hack work, i don't know what else to try. sorry.

    edit: thehighlife:
use a program called winSCP to change the properties of the IASP file. however i believe the file you download is already set to 0775. i tried to answer a lot of the questions on the actual youtube video page

    here http: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwVfO9mCG_Q

DX thread here: DealExtreme: $6.53 Premium Composite AV + USB Sync Charging Cable with Auth-Chip for iPod/iPhone 2G/3G 2.2.1

scroll to the bottom to the link that says "solution for 3.0" or something. its discussed further there.

I too am now looking for a solution to 3.0.1

Hey guys, Looks like our Chinese brothers over in Asia did the work for us.

After much frustration with 3.0 messing up my iPhone 3G's DX cables (which worked fine on 2.2.1), I decided to go looking on eBay.

I bought one that was labeled both "ORIGINAL" and "iPHONE 3GS" from Hong Kong for $19.99 shipped! Although it says "original," I'm a bit doubtful of that, I really don't think it's OEM. That said, and most importantly, the cables WORK!!! Also, the build-quality is quite nice! I doubt the casual observer would even notice they're not real.

In my opinion, $19.99 & a week or two of waiting beats paying Apple $50 for some damn cables just so we can listen/watch
OUR music/movies in the way we want to!!

    Oh yeah a few tips:

    • They do not come with a charger.

    • None of that pretty packaging you'd get from Apple (no box, mine came in a bubble wrapped envelope)

    • Be careful not to confuse COMPONENT (Red, Green, Blue + Red, White) with COMPOSITE outputs
      (Red, White, Yellow)
