    From phonescoop
A TTY is a special device that lets people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech-impaired use the telephone to communicate, by allowing them to type text messages. A TTY is required at both ends of the conversation in order to communicate.

Like a traditional modem for land-lines, a traditional TTY will only work on analog mobile phone networks, not digital. Therefore a special digital TTY mode must be used with digital mobile phones.

Originally started on land line phones,TTY is telephone for the deaf. It connects to a terminal and instead of talking, the deaf type and read on the display. Sort of the first ever chat program or SMS.
