Lets say you like to log into a messenger client. Right now with Apple's restrictions apps can't run in the background so if you close the app you can no longer receive messages. Push will allow notification that you have a message without the app actually running.

No they keep you logged in now but you have to open the app again to see any messages you have received while the app was closed. With 3.0 Push, it will alert you like a text message no matter what app your in that you have a new message so you can go back into the app and check it immediately. It will be provided per app and will not cost any extra, well besides the cost of the app with that feature that is.

You can. It's called Backgrounder. ;] But I'm with Apple on that. Running apps in the background seriously drains your battery. I woke up one morning, logged on to Palringo, ran it in the background, and didn't touch my iPhone since. Five hours later, I turned my phone on and it was at 47%. It drained over 1/2 my battery in sleep mode with one app running in the background. I haven't used Backgrounder since.
