Could someone tell me exactly what this is? I have also heard about newer versions and about updating it, can someone tell me how to update it? As for the version i have i dont know all i can say is that it is on 1.1.4 and i done it by using the do it all button in Ziphone

You will need to install BootNeuter to your phone and select upgrade bootloader to 4.6

Maybe you should double check what you are trying to answer.
I think alot of people are confused between the baseband and bootloader.
The baseband is updated by the new firmwares (if apple so chooses). So If you want to update the baseband just plug in and hit install new firmware or just restore.

Yes, you do. In a nutshell The bootloader is what loads the kernel, which then checks the firmware and starts and manages the OS.

Your bootloader is not "out of date" both 3.9 and 4.6 bootloaders still work, After 1.0.2 the phones were shipped with 4.6. A little bit ago, phones with 4.6 could not be unlocked so a few dev's came up with a way to downgrade the bootloader, and fake downgrade a b.L. Now you can just bootneuter and it's completely reversible, the appropriate way to go.

Ok thanks, so one last question (I think ) is there any benefits to updating it?

No. If you are on 3.9 you are just fine. Lets say you wanted to downgrade your firmware from 1.1.4 to 1.1.1 and you now happen to have a bootloader with 4.6 instead of OTB 3.9 you wouldn't be able to, or a hell of a lot of work. There are really no benefits from upgrading it.
