There is no way to tell an app not to background which is a flaw I think.. I have realized my memory is low and open up processes in SB Settings and there's like 10 apps running that don't need to be! As for your airplane mode question... possibly an oversight on Apple's part?

It's not that annoying when app store apps background, because they freeze, but basic apps end up using a lot of memory

I think backgrounder has the ability to "override" that but I dont think its been updated for iOS 4 yet.

I found a way to fix this. I saw the same problem too, and typing in a text box would be laggy. First, launch the multitasking with double-press of Home button. Then hold down on one of the recent apps, and hit the minimize thing. It doesn't delete the app, but it stops it from running but also cancels it from multitasking TEMPORARILY. The next time you launch that app it'll be there. Hope this helps
