Thread: Cydia problem in China - apt.saurik.com Host Unreachable

  1. #1
Default Cydia problem in China - apt.saurik.com Host Unreachable
I am currently living in China and have recently had a problem when installing or updating apps from Cydia. When Cydia tries to get an app from apt.saurik.com, I receive a Host Unreachable message.

I've had this problem for 1 or 2 months now. First off, the problem is only related to installing Cydia applications from Saurik's source (Cydia Installer, Winterboard, etc). I am able to install apps from other sources, such as BigBoss's. The problem is occurring on 3G, GPRS, EDGE and broadband connections (over WiFi).

What's confusing is that I am able to do the following:
    - Access apt.saurik.com via http and browse through all of the available folders. Tested both on wireless and a tethered 3G connection.
    - The Cydia installer seems to load and function fine - the program works as normal, except for installing apps from Saurik's source.
    - The apt sources list seems to update fine - I have received notifications of updates from apt.saurik.com and currently have 3 outstanding.

I have tried the following to no avail:
    - Removed all of the files [.gpg's and release files] (except the Partial folder and lock file) in the /var/lib/apt/lists/ folder. Rebooted. Updated. No joy.
    - Removed all .list files (except the saurik.list file) from /private/ect/apt/sources.list.d folder. Rebooted. Updated. No joy.

I should probably mention that I was able to update to APT 0.7:
    - apt-key
    - HTTPS Method
    - Strict
    - Strict (lib)

I still appear to be on APT 0.6 Transitional, but I have no idea if this has any relevance to the problem.

My guess is that the 'Gr3@7_F1r3W@11-0f_C' has been given an update. A secure web service that I used (but won't name) has recently stopped working too. The web service is definitely down due the the GFC.

I'm unable to access apt.saurik.com via https, but I'm not even sure if this is possible under perfect conditions. I only tried this because of the 'APT 0.7 HTTPS Method that is listed as having been installed. I'm not sure if APT 0.6 HTTPS Method was installed previously. I didn't pay enough attention to it.

I do not want to reinstall the OS (currently 3.1.2), in case it is not possible to install the Cydia apps again, which would essentially render my iPhone useless.

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Code:

Which IP do you get when you resolve apt.saurik.com? If you get a different one you should edit your hosts file.

How about a ping or tracert?

Everything seems to be fine. It's only when trying to install that I receive the error message 'Host Unreachable'.

Unable to run the commands from the iPhone as I don't have them. Using my PC on the same wifi:

Did you ever try to install something via Shell? Are you sure that it's really apt.saurik.com which is not reachable? From which repository is the package you try?

  7. #7
I've only ever ran an 'apt-get update' from the terminal. Not a full app install. The repository is Saurik's...Telesphereo Tangelo. All others seem to function fine at this time and I've only ever had the odd hiccup in the past.

    Thanks

Okay, what do you see when you do this? apt-get install -d bsdiff (Don't worry, it's just a download, no install). I see the following
    Code:
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
      bsdiff
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 6824B of archives.
After this operation, 69.6kB of additional disk space will be used.
    Get:1 http://apt.saurik.com tangelo-3.7/main bsdiff 4.3-1 [6824B]
    Fetched 6824B in 1s (3494B/s)
Download complete and in download only mode

    Ok. Partial result with this.

When I first tried to install, it worked ok and it prompted to continue install. I selected no.

However, I tested this with the 'Cydia' upgrade and it didn't work. Both packages are from Telesphereo Tangelo.

I tried to install 'bsdiff' again and it failed - 'POSIX: Operation Timed Out'. On the second trial for both apps, I noticed that it was tried to connect to 'cache.saurik.com' but failed. I think this is the server that I am unable to reach, for some reason, which explains why I can access 'apt.saurik.com' via a web browser and why I can access update information, etc. I tried accessing 'cache.saurik.com' from a browser and, lo and behold, it failed!

For some reason, I'm unable to reach this server.

Damn. I erased An entire message.

Right, unable to run traceroute fro iPhone. Don't know why...

No we're getting somewhere. It seems to be a nationwide dns error (from what I can tell), whether intended by the government or not.

When I get home, I will try modifying the hosts file - 93.184.221.133 cache.saurik.com.

Right now, I don't know how to edit it on my iPhone. I don't have nano, an I don't trust my cat skills.

Thanks for your help. I will give you an update soon.

The double quotes are important! Otherwise you cannot use the Linefeeds in the string that you append to /etc/hosts.

im having a similar problem, currently in China and trying to update Cydia, i just updated to 3.1.3 and now trying to install/update Cydia but nothing works, just get lots of errors 'Cached Failed' etc.
im not sure if it has to do with China f_rewall, but seems like you resolved your problem. i dont really understand much of the SSH stuff, been playing around such as deleting stuff in the private/var etc.. but still no luck.

    Default China & Saurik
    Hi there

I think we're a few having the same problem...
I'm in China too and i was trying to install ultrasn0w to unlock my baseband.
But it seems that I can't get ulstrasn0w without upgrading Cydia, which is impossible because Index of / isn't reachable...

I think I would be able to follow your instructions (thanks to x5c0d3 ) but I just don't know how to get into those codes...
Do I need to download the Terminal? I never used it...
    But I'm a quick learner
I've been dealing a lot with CSS, I guess it isn't that different!

    Can you help please...?
    Thank you in advnace

I was unable to update cydia for months now. I just edit the host file as you said, and it worked without any problem.

I'm back in the jailbreak train thanx to you x5c0d3

My iPhone owes you so much

I am in China and have the same problem as the others. I am ready to try modifying the hosts file but need assistance in finding where to access it.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
