Default Can I simply activate iPhone with AT&T then cancel right away ?
My brother in law is visiting from Brazil, he wants to buy an iPhone to use in Brazil. I assume the new iPhone will be 1.1.1 FW.

What is the best way to activate the iPhone ?

I read the wiki on alternate activation methods but with iphone 1.1.1 FW and newer iTunes and all, I'm not sure what method will still work and what method is obsolete.

Can I simply activate new iPhone with AT&T via iTunes then call to cancel ?

If so can I call to cancel right away or should I wait a day or two ?

And what do I tell AT&T the reason I'm canceling ? does it matter ?

    Thanks.

Yup, you can cancel, after paying an enormous early cancellation fee.

Hmm.. maybe in the States things are different. Here in Canada, if you cancel in the first 30 days, you have to give the phone back too. (if it meets the return requirements)

I think this guys point is, he wants to cancel the AT&T plan, but keep the iPhone for his friend. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, I want to keep the iPhone for my brother in law to use in Brazil. Then unlocking it and use with GSM carrier in Brazil.
I only want to activate the iPhone (with AT&T).

I will buy the iPhone from Apple store.

Can I activate the iPhone with AT&T then immediately cancel AT&T account or not (without having to pay any fee) ?

    Please advise.

    Thanks.

You can just buy the phone and downgrade the software (if the iphone comes with 1.1.1) and jailbreak and use iactivate. Why deal with the mess of the whole ATT ordeal?

OK, thanks. I thought you had to activate the iPhone first before you can downgrade (or do anything with the iPhone) ?

Are you sure I can downgrade before activate ?

    Thanks.

PS: Mostlikely the new iPhones you buy today will be 1.1.1, I think. How can you tell what version FW you have before activating it ?

If you buy a 1.1.1 version of the iPhone, even if you downgrade and activate it, you won't be able to use it as a phone. Phone, Edge and SMS will not work. No crack has been achieved to unlock FM 1.1.1 yet.

Really ? I thought you could downgrade from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 and unlock already.

    Thanks.

You can downgrade to 1.0.2, jailbreak it so you can use third party apps, WiFi, Itunes, safari and all that stuff. But the downgrade does not affect the baseband (modem), and this is required to unlock the phone.

Please see link RE: Get Your Precious 1.0.2 iPhone Back from a Misguided 1.1.1 Upgrade

    It said using the following files;

    -ICE03.14.08_G.fls
    -ICE03.14.08_G.eep
    -bbupdater

And ssh into your iPhone or run locally from the terminal.app:

    chmod +x bbupdater
    bbupdater -f *.fls -e *.eep

After all of the Baseband flashing goodness is over, you should be able to successfully run anySIM and after a restart will have a FULLY working 1.0.2 iPhone.

    Is the article "misguided" ?

    Yes, it is.

But go ahead and ask if anyone here has successfully done it.

    Thanks.

But just so I know, let me go back to my original question,

Can I activate the iPhone with AT&T then immediately cancel AT&T account or not (without having to pay any fee) ?

Hmmm... my brother in law won't be here for another 2 weeks. I hope they'll have
a working downgrade solution by then. He was thinking to buy the Nokia 95 to use in Brazil and I was telling him to buy the iPhone instead.

    Oh well...

I guess I'll just tell him to buy the Nokia 95. Less headache for me. I don't want to recommend him to buy the iPhone and get the blame if it turms to iBrick.

Remember, when you give advice to friends or relatives you become responsible for the outcome. Tell him how great the iPhone is tell him how easy it is to unlock (or buy unlocked) tell him the risks when updating and let him make the decision. If he really wants the N95 then he should go with that.

Ok, regarding the question about canceling the plan etc, i currently live in Puerto Rico and we have ATT service, but for some reason, APPLE doesnt want to sell the iPhone here in the island. There's people that travel to the island and their iphones work flawlessly with edge and everything. I will be traveling soon to the US and i will probably buy an Iphone. I am a current ATT customer that i have my blackberry with, but for the reason mentioned above i cant have the iphone. The question is, if i go to the US, buy the iPhone, activate a new service line, and cancel RIGHT away and keep the iphone to myself, would i be able to just put my blackberry sim card on the iphone and continue with it? i dont want to hack it or unlock it cause i will be using ATT service. Would that work? Has anybody switched sim card with the iphone with another phone? (lets say that you use your father's sim card on the iphone and be able to use it) Its very frustrating that Apple doesnt want to sell the friking iphone over here. Let me know guys!
