A 3GS can still go back to 4.1 as Apple is still signing that firmware for 3GS. In tiny umbrella click advanced and deselect the box that says "set hosts to cydia on exit". Then close tiny umbrella and shift/option restore to a 4.1 firmware for your device.

Doesnt need to be jailbroken. You will get a error 1015 near the end of the restore process when going to 4.1. It is expected, once you get it open up tiny umbrella, click on your device and press "exit recovery".

Well you need to download a copy of the 3GS firmware for 4.1. After that you would open iTunes then press shift (windows) or option (Mac) and click restore. Doing that will open a window where you can choose the 4.1 firmware you downloaded.

Error20 came up again but I couldn't get it in dfu mode

When I opened up iTunes and hit the shift key it didn't always open up the box to choose firmware 4.1

Hold home and sleep for 10 seconds. Then release sleep button and keep holdin home button for 10 more seconds. Screen should be black and iTunes should see iPhone in recovery.
