No you close TU after you do those steps. This also means TSS server isn't running because the program is closed Doesn't matter if you're in DFU mode or not because you're not using a custom firmware.

Using TU in any way is deterring from pointing to Apple's server for this restore process, that's why you uncheck the box to point to Cydia then close it off. Then you will open iTunes to do the shift+restore.

Ooook. So, I opened TU, unchecked, closed. Opened Itunes, shift restore, firmware 4.1. I get itunes error 20. On my iphone screen, it shows the itunes logo and the cable connect icon.

error 20? Are you sure you're using a stock 4.1 not custom?

You've never edited your host file before either right?

I dont believe its custom. Downloaded it from: h**p://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750. Downloaded the 8B117 firmware.

I read something about the host file and some changes that might need to be made but I didnt make any. I should mention that a tutorial that I read, said that the host file should have certain information but mine didnt match. So, I didnt make any changes but Im also not sure what is supposed to or not be there.

Sorry, I was thinking failed DFU mode for custom fw which is error 21. Error 20 seems a tad ancient when I google it...

Disable any firewalls, instant messengers, etc. and attempt again?

Just before I try again .. just thought I would post my host file info:

    127.0.0.1 localhost
    #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    #127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com

These are the last 3 entries of the file. Any issues with that?

Hm. And what error do you get with the TSS server running?

  12. #71
You may want to download the 4.1 update file again. Maybe you got a bad download.

I agree. The 8B117 firmware is correct in that its 4.1 but make sure you are downloading the correct one for the 3GS if this what you are trying to restore to.

It will say something this: "iPhone2,1_4.1_8B117."

If it has any other number besides the "2,1" then it isn't stock and it isn't for the 3GS.

Yep thats the one I got. I'll try downloading it again. I got it from Iclarified. Options for another site that may be more reliable? Or is that one ok?

Lol I know I said close it but we apparently have come up with an error. I would like to see what error occurs with the TSS server running this time so it may help me figure out why it didn't work in the first place.

lol ok. I"ll try it again with it running :P

Also, something I noticed and didnt mention ... everytime my downgrade fails, the ipsw file Im attempting to use, ends up in my recycle bin. I have to put it back in the appropriate folder to use it again. Mean anything to anyone?

When you uncheck : set hosts file to cydia, you are pointing your hosts file towards apple for verification. You can close TU and don't start Tss Server.
A normal DFU is needed if you are downgrading to a stock firmware, in your case is 4.1
If itunes is running close it and reopen again.

Now, run TU and click Exit recovery to error out 1015

Of course, its not that easy. When I open TU, Enter / Exit / Fix recovery are greyed out and not clickable.
