Thread: Upgrading an iPhone 3GS...help please

  1. #21
I have the same situation (3GS on 4.1.3 that I want to upgrade to 4.0.1).
I followed your instructions (clicked save shsh in tiny umbrella).
    Now what?

    Thanks

If you see the 4.0.1 shsh blogs inside TU, highlight it, put your iphone into recovery mode and start Tss Server.
Now you do the Shift + Restore to 4.0.1 and let it restore.

Make sure you have itunes Atlesast 9.2 for 4.0.1 restore.

I tried that without recovery mode and got the same error. Will putting it in recovery mode make the difference?
Sorry but I'm kinda apprehensive since my phone works now and I don't want to brick it.

    Thanks

So is there danger of putting the phone in DFU mode and trying this? It didn't work for me without DFU mode and I don't want to be stuck if it doesn't work again and the phone is in recovery mode.

Since I'm not getting any replies, let me focus my question

If I put the phone in recovery mode and the tinyumbrella thing doesn't work will I be able to easily revert back to the current situation? (would that e via restore from my current backup?)
    Or will I be screwed?

    Thanks

If you are talking about trying to preserve your baseband using tiny umbrella on a 3GS, then no, do not try it. You will lose your unlock. The only way for you to safely update to 4.1 would be with pwnage tool. If you have shsh for 4.0-4.0.2 then you can use tiny umbrella to restore to one of them and still be able to unlock again.

I want to upgrade to 4.0.1 so that I still have my jailbreak (my iPhone is already carrier unlocked, I bought it in Europe).

If you are saying that your iphone is factory unlocked then you have nothing to worry about. You can update to 4.1 with itunes then use limera1n/greenpoison to jailbreak again. Make sure you are indeed factory unlocked though.

I'm sure it's carrier unlocked I just didn't know there was a jailbreak for 4.1. So you say I can just upgrade and jailbreak?

Yes, just update, have itunes activate for you then jailbreak again.
