    Default 3gs 4.01 to 4.1 restore problem
iphone 3gs 4.01 jailbroken using spirit (jailbreakme.com), attempting to use the restore option to upgrade to ios 4.1 so that I can use linera1n to jailbreak it again. When I hit the restore button, I choose the 4.1 that I downloaded from apple then it extracts software then gives me the error that apple update servers are down. Any help please?

o btw, my main computer is a macbook but my g/f has a dell so i'll use hers to jailbreak with limera1n

If you have edited your hosts file to point to Cydia, point it back to Apple. If the problem still exists , then Apple server could be really down.

You can also download the 4.1 ipsw from here :
iClarified - iPhone - Where To Download iPhone Firmware Files From
and do the shift + Restore to 4.1 ipsw

Just to inform the curious, I downgraded from 4.1 back to 4.01 so that I could jailbreak awhile back and in order to downgrade I had to trick the host file. I remembered this the moment yeow mentioned the hosts file.

An idevice that uses shsh blogs to restore to stock firmware when Apple has stopped signing requires you to either point your hosts file towards Cydia server or setup up your own tss server.
