Default Iphone 3gs, but umbrella says it has 3g blob on file?
So I bought an iphone with ios 4.0.2, and wanted to downgrade to jailbreak it (jailbreaks i've tried for 402 have not worked). I decided to check tiny umbrella and see if the previous owner had a 4.0.1 on file with cydia. It turned up negative for 3gs, but positive for a 3g blob on cydia (both 4.0 and 4.0.1).

    Heres the message:

    09/21/2010 20:06:15.263 Asking CYDIA for SHSH blobs for iPhone3GS 4.0.1 (8A306)...

09/21/2010 20:07:00.443 This device isn't eligible for the requested build.

09/21/2010 20:07:00.461 CYDIA DOES NOT HAVE YOUR SHSH FOR iPhone3GS 4.0.1 (8A306) THERE IS NO WAY FOR YOU TO GET THEM. SORRY. YOU ARE JUST TOO LATE.

09/21/2010 20:07:36.708 TSS Server has cached the following files:

    09/21/2010 20:07:36.725 iPhone3G 4.0 (8A293)-53xxxxxxxx03
    09/21/2010 20:07:36.739 iPhone3G 4.0.1 (8A306)-53xxxxxxxx03

09/21/2010 20:07:36.808 Devices with ECIDs matching the above AND restoring to the exact firmware version listed above will succeed!

So I start thinking maybe it actually IS a 3g, but tiny umbrella, at the top left of the screen, says the connected iphone is a 3gs, and the phone has a Nike + Ipod button under general settings, so im positive its a 3gs (its fast too).
Can anyone explain what is going on? I'm pretty sure im sunk, but wanted to know if anyone had any ideas. Thanks!

    I had a 3G saved 3.1.3 blob and saved 3GS 4.0 blob but it only has a 3G 4.0 on file so a downgraded my 3G from 4.1 to 3.1.3 with this and a 4.0 restore I don't understand

Then you are screwed, you cannot you use the 3G blogs to downgrade if you have a 3gs.

Well, that good to know at least (beats futility =D). Anyone know how that could have happened though? I thought the backups were specific to the device itself?

They are. It's not that easy though.

Although Apple assigns certain devices certain ranges of ECIDs (the piece of the puzzle that's unique to each iDevice), the signing server doesn't check to see if the type of blob requested matches the ECID range the request is being signed for. Apple will produce a 3G/3GS/i4/iPT2G/iPT3G/iPT4G/iPad SHSH blob for any ECID number you can come up with.

Couple that with Apple's inconsistent signing windows (3G and iPT2G were signed far longer on 4.0 than the 3GS/iPT3G/i4 were), and you'll have scenarios like the one you had arise.

That makes sense. I have one more question: What if I restored factory settings? Wouldn't that put the original os on the phone, 3.0 I think? Could I then install a cooked 3.0 ipsw from pwnage?

Nope. The "wipe all content and settings" button just nukes the /User (/private/var/mobile/) logical partition and restores it according to the recovery partition already on the device. It will not downgrade the OS, it'll just be like you did a restore to whatever version of iOS you're already on.
