    Smile Restore 3GS from 3.1.3 to 4.0.1
I'm a bit late jumping onboard the ios4 train but, nontheless did.

Wanting to actually upgrade to 4.0.1 I went to this post and started reading up. Below were my notes as I went through the process on win7:

    • Download Side bar gadget that show seconds
    • Download iPhone2,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore.ipsw
    • Update hosts
    • backup phone
    • turn phone off
    • Use sidebar gadget to help with the 10 second thingy
    • Click ok
    • Hold Shift key and click the restore button
    • chose iPhone2,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore.ipsw
    • (Can't remember the rest... watching TV)
    • Oh, yeah. Open safari, go to JailbreakMe, ask to jailbreak and wait. (thethering was enabled)
    • then i chose to restore from the back up of my phone in itunes.
    • Things aren't exactly the way I want them and I'm doing a lot of reinstalling but... total effort 45 minutes.

I hope someone finds this helpful.
