Apple is still signing 4.0.1. No need for shsh's at this point. Just download 4.0.1 and shift+click restore.

Not very good with this stuff, can someone please explain to me in detail, how to downgrade from 4.0.2 to 4.0.1?

  11. #8
@Baseball6 : go to "Downloads" link above and download the 4.0.1 firmware for your phone model, the shift+click (option+click on Mac) the "Restore" button in iTunes after connecting your phone...

Well, first off you will hear a knock at your door, then you will answer it, Steve Jobs will be standing on the other side of the door you just opened (yes, your door!). He will stare at you for a moment, then without notice or hesitation, he will open hand slap you in the face (it will leave a red mark) and then he will turn away, get back into his car and drive off back home and you will probably cry.

Your phone wont get messed up. All your doing is a restore, the only difference is that your choosing which firmware to restore to.

when I follow your procedure, itunes instructs me to look for an IPSW file, which is not in the old firmware zips. What am I missing?

The firmware should not be in zip format. Ie saves them wrong when you use it to download them. Just change the .zip at the end of the file name to .ipsw, or redownload using firefox
