Just for info, 4.0.1 is still being signed so there's no actual need to edit the hosts file or use TinyUmbrella. Just download the 4.0.1 firmware and shift-restore in iTunes. It's that simple.

(TinyUmbrella is still good for storing the SHSHs so you should still use it for that)

I'm not quite sure why, but I managed to shift-click and restore to 4.0.1 with a stock host file.

    Steps:

Long time ago: Saved SHSH blobs on saurik's server.

Before this: Rebooted iPhone, and randomly got put into recovery mode. Getting out of recovery mode as if I got in by accident didn't work. So I put this:
    Code:
    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
at the bottom of my hosts file and restored. Got a 1004 error, and got put back in restore mode. Tried to use RecBoot, but it didn't work for me. Then, I did this:

    1. Commented out the edited part of my hosts file, like so:
    Code:
    # 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    2. Shift-Clicked "restore" and selected 4.0.1 firmware.

    3. Waited, and it restored normally as if apple had approved it.

    I'm very confused.

    iPhone 4 by the way.

uhh what is all this talk about iTunes 9.2 and above not working? I just restored a 3.1.3 3GS to 4.0.1, setting it up as a new phone, using 9.2.1 and it worked flawlessly. I did have SHSH on Saurik's server and hosts file edited to point there.

So it would seem that 9.2.1 DOES work. No need to go back to 9.1.

It worked because Apple is in fact STILL signing 4.0.1

Yes apple is still signing 4.0.1!!! I jus finished a restore for 3G 4.01. Created a custom 4.0.1 firmware and the hit option restore in iTunes. Also the reason iTunes 9.2 works for 4+ firmware

Any1 know if apple is still signing off on 4.0.1? 8/19/10

Thanks buddy!! Hopefully around 3pm eastern time I'll be able to do my iPhone 4. I noticed that cydia had my 4.0.2 blobs saved today, that's why I asked.

  16. #32
anyone update if apple is still signing? I have a few quirks with my 4.0.1 (like I can't use cut and paste - I can mark the text, but it immediately crashes the app I am in, OR I can view my photos, but if I touch the photo like to swipe it, CRASH).

So, I think I need to restore 4.0.1 and I am not worried about the pdf exploit, so, I just want to confirm apple is still signing so I don't have to figure out how to get my shsh (it is saved, cydia tells me that).

So, what does that mean EXACTLY?? Can you help me understand the ramifications of this?? I have downloaded the 4.0.1 firmware from iClarify, and I have saved my SHSH to Cydia. What does this mean to me that Apple has stopped signing 4.0.1??? (...go easy on my...I'm a WinMo geek...LOL! )

If you have your shsh's for 4.0.1 you'll still be able to downgrade.

Here's a guide to do it:
Restore iPhone 3GS to 3.1.2 Using SHSHs on File with Cydia | Windows

    Yesterday,

iPhone 3GS 16 GB (PC- Windows XP)

Was running 4.01 and decided I wanted to jailbreak. Thought I'd better update to the latest upgrade before doing so. Yes, hindsight is 20/20.

Goes to iTunes and downloads iTunes 9.2.
    Upgrades iPhone to 4.2

Goes back to jailbreakme.com. There I find out my terrible mistake.

Tries to find out how to downgrade to 4.01.

Early afternoon downloads and runs Tiny Umbrella.
It gives me this kind of message.

08/20/2010 13:58:25.865 The Real Firmware Umbrella - v4.02.04 by semaphore 08/20/2010 13:58:25.875 For help click here 08/20/2010 13:58:25.885 Connect a device to continue... 08/20/2010 13:58:30.512 NOT running as administrator OR your hosts file is not editable - Cannot listen on port 80! If you see iPad above and you have an iPad3G THEY WILL WORK JUST FINE. There is just no way for me to tell the difference between iPad and iPad3G from the SHSH alone.

Reads this on how to downgrade:

How to Downgrade iPhone 4.0.2 to 4.0.1

Downloads 4.01 firmware (step two in the above "How to")

    Discovers "shsh" files on computer.

    Step 3:
Puts phone into DFU or Restore or whatever it is.

    Step 4

With phone in DFU mode Tiny Umbrella says:

08/20/2010 14:15:10.630 The Real Firmware Umbrella - v4.02.04 by semaphore 08/20/2010 14:15:10.640 For help click here 08/20/2010 14:15:10.650 Connect a device to continue... 08/20/2010 14:15:11.250 NOT running as administrator OR your hosts file is not editable - Cannot listen on port 80! Ran a portscan. Looks as if port 80 is open.
We only ever use the system administrator account.

With phone "on" (not in DFU) running 4.2 this message appears:

08/20/2010 14:22:36.471 The Real Firmware Umbrella - v4.02.04 by semaphore 08/20/2010 14:22:36.481 For help click here 08/20/2010 14:22:36.491 Connect a device to continue... 08/20/2010 14:22:37.052 NOT running as administrator OR your hosts file is not editable - Cannot listen on port 80! Both times it says TSS Server not running.

    Tries Step 5:
Goes to select step two's firmware and nothing will run.

    What am I doing wrong?

Downgrades to iTunes 9.1 to see if this will help. Nothing different happens.

Tries again to run TSS Server with Trend Micro firewall off.

    Same results.

Wants to bang head against wall. Completely defeated.

    Can anyone help me?

You won't be able to downgrade. Storing SHSHs need to be done while Apple is still signing the specific firmware versions. Apple is no longer signing 4.0.1 or lower, so you can't store the SHSHs which means you can't downgrade to those versions.

Sorry, I just re-read your post and the error messages you got from TinyUmbrella. From what I can tell, you can in fact downgrade.

    Try this:
    1. Connect the phone to the computer.
    2. Shut down iTunes.
    3. Right-click the TinyUmbrella icon and choose 'Run as Administrator'.
    4. In TinyUmbrella, click 'Start TSS server'.
    5. Open iTunes and go to the iPhone page.
    6. Hold down the 'shift' key and click 'restore' and point to the downloaded iOS 4.0.1 firmware.
    7. If you get an error at the end of the restore, kick the phone out of recovery with the 'Kick out ...' option in TinyUmbrella.
We're all just toymakers in the game of life.
