Default 3GS with 3.1.2 - Odd Situation / Need Help
OK, so I've got a 3GS running 3.1.2 /w OLD bootrom that is NOT (nor has it ever been) jailbroken.

When the iPhone 4 came out I decided I would jailbreak/unlock my 3GS, upgrade it to iOS4, and sell it to a friend of mine on T-Mobile.

I understood that to jailbreak iOS4 you must be already running jailbroken 3.xx. To jailbreak my 3GS, just a week or two ago I grabbed version 3.1.5 of PwnageTool, made a custom 3.1.2 fw to restore to, used PwnageTool to put the device into recovery mode, and attempted to restore to this custom firmware.

The restore did not work, and will always give me a 1604 error. Now my 3GS is stuck in recovery mode permanently.

I do not have the SHSH blobs for this phone. Is there any way to extract them from a non-jailbroken 3GS 3.1.2 phone stuck in recovery mode? I suppose if not I am screwed, eh?

You would have had to jailbreak the phone with blackra1n first THEN install the custom fw made by pwnage tool. A phone has to be jailbroken before it will accept a custom fw. You can try using irecovery to kick it out of restore mode, but you may have to do a normal restore. That would mean 4.0.1 which at this time is not jailbreakable.

Awesome, iRecovery worked like a charm. My phone is back out of restore mode.

Now, what should I do next? Is there a particular version of blackra1n I should use to jailbreak 3.1.2 or will any current version of blackra1n work?

    Thanks so much.

Use redsn0w 0.9.2 or Blackra1n at 3.1.2 to jailbreak and then restore to cfw iOS 4.0. If you have iTunes 9.1 then using Blackra1n, u need Blackbreeze to make it compatible

The current version of blackra1n. If you have iTunes 9.1 or higher you'll need blackbreeze too, you can get that from the ih8sn0w website.

Thanks, I appreciate the help... actually I already ran blackra1n rc3 before reading your post... it appears to have worked. Do I still need to use blackbreeze?

The end result I am trying to achieve is getting it to run jailbroken/unlocked iOS4. Should I unlock the baseband now while it's still 3.1.2 or should I upgrade to jailbroken iOS4 and then do it?

Once you get it jailbroken you can leave it how it is or use pwnage 4.0.1 to create a custom 4.0 fw. There really wouldn't be a point to installing the custom fw you already made since it's the same fw it's already on, and it will already be jailbroken.

Nope if it ran and you ended up with the black raindrop on the springboard then your good and you don't need blackbreeze. Just open that black drop and choose install cydia.

Use pwnage tool 4.0.1 to create a custom 4.0 and restore to that. Then go into cydia and install ultrasn0w and reboot. The phone will be unlocked and ready for your t mobile friend.
