Default Tutorial: iPhone 3gs 4.0 Beta -> 3.1.3 The Legit Way [CURES iTunes 1015 Error]
If You Are on a 3gs with the 4.0 Beta and Want 3.1.3 but keep getting the 1015 iTunes error when doing a DFU downgrade keep reading.

Hey MMi. I had iPhone 4.0 for about 2 days now and those who have it found it to be on the buggy side but very cool. However for those individuals like myself there is a problem when downgrading the 4.0b -> 3.1.3 stock on a 3gs. After two days of frustration dealing with SHSH hash servers and the annoying 1015 iTunes Error a kind Twitter user (@xSn0w) resolved my issue. I am here today to share the how-to.

    The Quick and Easy Directions.

    1. If you are currently on 4.0 this is good and makes my directions simple. Firstly shut off your iPhone completely but leave it plugged in to your computer (Mac or PC).

    2. Press and hold the power and home buttons together for about 10 second. (You will see the apple logo pop up then the device shut off) Once it shuts off after the brief pop-up apple release power and hold home. Your iTunes will recognize your iPhone in recovery while it appears to be off (AKA Black Screen)

    3. Option-Click Mac / Shift-Click Windows restore and select your 3.1.3 (or 3.1.2 if you wish to jailbreak).

    4. Let iTunes do it's thing. If you got to use the bathroom or get a drink do it now.

    5. Come back to your computer and most likely you will have a 1015 iTunes error. Just hit okay we don't give a flying fart are 3.1.(2/3) is already restored.

    6. iTunes will state the iPhone is in recovery just hit okay and leave that screen up.

    7. Download this package <http://www.mediafire.com/file/ywhxqzdoimg/iHackintosh%20iRecovery%20Package%20for%20Windows% 20&%20Mac.rar>

    8. Unrar the package then unzip the required files for your OS.

Notice: You Must Leave iTunes Open the Entire Time While doing this.

    9. For Mac open up Terminal and drag the iRecovery file to Terminal. It will show the path to this script file. After you do this drag type "-s" (no quotes) and hit enter. Following this enter type the following 3 commands in this order:

    setenv auto-boot true (enter)
    saveenv (enter)
    /exit (enter)

9.5. For Windows run iRecovery.exe as an Administrator. Then use the above commands.

    10. Now press and hold power and home until the screen shuts off and your 3gs will boot normally.

    Enjoy!

If you have a 3gs you would have to spoof the iTunes activation server (see the sticky in this form)

If I upgrade to 4.0, could I use a custom firmware to go back to 3.1.3 and be jailbroken. Custom firmware made with pwnage tool on 3.1.3 for 3gs?

I wouldn't try it. It's not possible to restore to any CFW if you're on 3.1.3 so I don't see how it'd work if you were on 4.0

4.0 updates the baseband so if anyone tries, make absolutely sure you don't need an unlock and that you have 3.1.2 SHSHs stored.

    Default Questions about activating 4.0
Is there a link or would you able to tell me how I can activate the carrier on 4.0 OS. I downloaded the beta version, but after the install, it prompts me that I have to part of the developer program to be able to activate it.

Is there a similar technique I can use to activate my phone so it would work with the new 4.0 OS?

    Thanks!

The 40-character device ID of your phone needs to be registered with the Apple Developer Portal before 4.0 beta will activate. You can pay $99 for your own account which allows you to add up to 100 devices or you can purchase a slot from one of the forum users for $5-10. Please note that 4.0 beta is buggy.

Your welcome for the guide. and @s1l3nt you shouldnt need all this to downgrade the 3g just pop it into DFU mode as listed above. @Reako it is possible but you must use this method to downgrade to 3.1.3 then downgrade to 3.1.2 using SHSH if you have them on file.

I got this to work. The first time I tried it did not work, but I just went through the steps again and bingo. Thanks you. Appreciate the help and hard work.

Three questions now. Can I go back to 4.0 if I wanted? Can I downgrade my baseband from 5.13.03 to 5.12.01? I would guess not at this point, but I figured I would ask. Anyone seen/heard anything about whether or not the JBs that will supposedly be released in the next month will work on 3.1.3 with 5.13.03? Again, I would guess nobody really knows, but my first instinct would be that it would work because its highly unlikely Apple was able to patch the exploit that geohot discovered.

FYI I still needed to use the same process for the 3GS to downgrade my 3G (which worked like a charm. Standard DFU restore only did not work.
