    Default [3GS] Downgrade from factory-fresh 3.1 to 3.0?
    Hi folks!
I just got my new iPhone 3GS from T-Mobile this Monday. They are shipping now with FW 3.1.

Looking at the dev-team blog, I noticed that there is a new release of PwnageTool which supports 3.1 on 3GS but only if you've done a jailbreak on 3.0* before.

So my question is: Can I downgrade the new iPhone to 3.0 using saurik's man-in-the-middle attack and jailbreak from there to 3.1?

Any info on that topic would be really appreciated. Thanks a lot.

    Al

You are stuck with no way to jailbreak until a new tool is released.

I'm in the same situation. I have a 3G[S] with an official Australian Carrier. It shipped with firmware 3.1 on it.

If I understand correctly, I can't downgrade and jailbreak to 3.0.

    That part I get.

What I don't get is - should I still follow Saurik's 'man in the middle' approach to get my phone details stored with Cydia, or is there no point?

For the moment I'm OK with staying on "official 3.1" and waiting for a jailbreak for it, but should I attempt to store the details on Cydia in the meantime, or is there no point?

And what needs to happen for 3.1 for the 3g[S] to be jailbroken? Is it the baseband having no exploit or something?

    *confused*

First off do a little thinking. You have to be jailbroken to save the files on Saurik's server as its done through Cydia. So you cant even do that. And a jaibreak for 3.1 should be out very soon.

Do a little thinking yourself. You can edit the hosts file and do a restore to 3.1 through iTunes and and that will store your info. It's just simpler ie you don't need to do a restore if you do it through Cydia

He asked if he could store the files on Cydia. Pretty simple question.

The answer as I stated was no. And I stated why.

    Try being smart again.

Wow you ppl need to chill , he just asked a question so instead of these things just answer him and thats it . No need to be smart or anything thats why they call it a public forum ppl can ask what ever they want , and i know that they can search and find what they are looking for but sometimes search doesnt give you what you want thats why they post something like that.

    Haha

All bickering aside - I'm still confused. The end goal is to store some kind of file that apple sends you.

Question is - is that possible and if so, is it desirable for me with my factory 3.1 3G[S]?

I'm assuming that whenever a "real" jailbreak is released for 3.1 on the 3G[S] it will need this file. Or did I misunderstand Saurik's blog post?

The file is needed to downgrade or to stay at the current FW version if there is a newer version.

So, for example right now 3.1 is the newest and thats what you have installed. Right now the files wont do you any good BUT when 3.2 is released then....

If you need to restore for some reason and want to stay at 3.1, you will need those files otherwise you will be forced to go to 3.2

    Hope that makes sense.

if I understand it right once a jailbreak comes out for 3.1 then Cydia will be able to store the files for you so in the future you will be able to downgrade back to 3.1

I think by that time you will need to store your ECID on your computer . I dont think Cydia will do that anymore .

Cyrex, why wouldn't Cydia do that?

cpjr, not meaning to start any flame war, but if I'm not mistaken, there's indeed a way to have save your file with Saurik's server without jailbreaking your phone, according to these,

"This server will also act as a cache for any SHSH blobs it hasn't seen, acting as an intermediary to Apple's server. This effectively registers your device with the "on file" mechanism, which means you can now enjoy the protections of being able to downgrade your firmware in the future even if you aren't jailbroken."

It's under the paragraph "Bypassing the Overlord" in Saurik's article

If you redirect the call home to apple line in the HOSTS file and replace it with Saurik's server it may be able to cache the files without being jailbroken or even going into Cydia. Not sure on this but this might be what people are referring to. I'm happily on 3.0.1 and not upgrading just yet or unless I absolutely have to. Don't fix what isn't broke LOL.

after reading all this.. i had the same question in mind.. luckily my 3gS is jb on 3.0.1 with a 3.1 blob.. my question i have right now is *not to thread jack* i have followed the walk thru and was able to umbrella the 00.shsh file off a friends phone who was able to get the 3.0 sigs.. and i was able to get my files to point to the server with the ip address given.. if i plug in a phone on 3.1 and downgrade to 3.0.1 or 3.0 am i able to do so since i have the 3.0 ecid shsh file on my computer? pls help i been researching and reading alot about this and still came up with no answer.. hope i made sense...

the ECID SHSH is phone specific, so that means your friend's 3.0 ECID won't work on yours. If that would work, we probably won't have these hundreds and hundreds of threads.
