Thread: Orange UK - unlock!

    Default Orange UK - unlock!
With the announcement that Orange will soon be selling the 3G and 3GS iPhones, this means a software unlock won't be necessary for all Orange customers soon! - yipee!

Might give some hope to those on Orange who accidently upgraded to 3.1.

Not necessary, the BBC article says o2 will still be selling them (Though doesn't say for how long).
As far as I am aware, o2 is under no obligation to unlock their phones after the end of their exclusivity contract with Apple (which really sucks).

True - but if you're a current Orange customer with an iPhone, surely you'd only need to restore the phone with an 'orange' .ipsw?

or are you saying that the baseband will be different for an o2 phone and orange phone which stops either being unlocked and therefore either being transferred? If there's no way to transfer that really will suck!

No, what I'm saying is for the phone to be unlocked you have to have authorisation from the mobile operator.

There is no such thing as a different ispw for different mobile operators.
It's the way the baseband is programmed that determines if the phone is locked or not.

Can the .ipsw file not update the baseband though? I thought that's what the 3.1 update does? If you currently have an Orange sim with an iPhone why wouldn't orange authorise the baseband update to allow Orange sims? (I appreciate Orange will want you on an iPhone tariff, but lets assume that's present)

Yes, the ispw file can update the baseband, though this is not how unlocks are dealt with.

If an official unlock is released, it will be a matter of plugging your iPhone up to iTunes to do it.
