Default got a factory unlocked iphone - is that a good thing ?
    hello to all

I'm pretty much confused with all this mess around the new Apple 3.1 protections, and everything people should/must do to keep chances to ever maintain their devices jailbroken safe and sound.
(I also have to say I am no specialist at all, which robably explains much of this !).

Anyway, I live in Belgium, one of the rare countries where all iphones are sold factory unlocked, which means I can put any SIM card I want in it (belgian operator or foreign ones, no matter), without having to jailbreak anything.

My question is: is that big an advantage ? (I think it is). And because of this, do I still need to bother about this ECID and IBBS thing, put my data on file with Cyda, etc ?
I think I understood that the whole problem resides in the baseband thing, and everything is about keeping the jailbreak advantage to be able to choose any cellular phone operator.

My only concern about jailbreaking my iphone is to be able to install Cydia so I can customize my device, and especially use Appsync so I can install free apps. No interest in choosing my own operator, since i already have this opportunity, and will forever.

So can please someone let me know if I still should do the same thing that all other users (my iphone is currently NOT on file with Cydida), or if I can simply wait for a 3.1 jailbreak for my 3GS then update my 3.0.1 iphone before running the new jailbreak and then re-sync my apps after having installed appsync 3.1 ?

Not sure I am quite clear with my question, but I certainly hope that someone will give me an enlightened answer !
    thanks

well, it's currently not known if you will need the ECID, iBEC and/or iBSS to jailbreak the 3GS. it's likely. but since you have a factory unlocked iphone, you have a big advantage. you will always be able to jailbreak. even IF you need the iBEC and iBSS - since you can restore to 3.1 without losing your unlock, you can capture them any time you want. so you don't really have to worrie about anything - good for you

OP - it's my understanding that the iPhone 3Gs is requiring updates to be signed by Apple. A jailbroken update (one including Cydia) won't be officially signed, so getting it on the phone is going to be a trip, unless you have your stuff on file with Cydia.

That's just my understanding, I could be mistaken. I understand your phone will be carrier unlocked for it's duration, however jailbreaking involves installing custom software on your phone that (I believe) is unrelated to being carrier un/locked.

    Hope that helps.

It didn't take too long for them to find a jailbreak for 3.1.2, but one benefit of saving your ECID/SHSH with cydia is that when apple puts out the next update say 3.2, they will very likely fix the backdoor that was found to jailbreak 3.1.2 and then they will stop signing 3.1. why is this bad?

here's a scenario where it would be bad for you even with a factory unlocked phone:

so say if your phone messes up where it requires a restore. if apple has stopped signing 3.1.2 and you don't have a 3.1 SHSH on file with cydia, then you have no choice but to restore/upgrade to 3.2 and then assuming a jailbreak isn't out yet, you will lose the jailbreak and have to wait for a new jailbreak.

if you had your shsh on file, you then can restore to 3.1.2, as as there is a jailbreak out for 3.1.2 you can rejailbreak it and keep your phone jailbroken until a 3.2 jailbreak comes out.
if people keep finding a jailbreak for the newer os's quickly as they have done in the past, then not a huge deal as the chances of you needing to restore your phone in that short window between apple releasing a new update and no jailbreak is probably small.
but say apple gets really good at plugging the holes, so it takes them over a month or longer to find a jailbreak, then during that month you have to be careful to not do anything on your phone that could mess it up.

You can load a custom firmware all day long on a 3g[s] as long as the phone is already jailbroken when you go to load the custom firmware. The signing process is completely bypassed as far as I could tell. I never once saw anything about "verifying restore with apple" when I restored to a Pwnaged 3.1 from a redsn0wed 3.0

Nope. As long as the phone is in a jailbroken state when it decides to act up and need a restore, you can just load the custom 3.1/3.1.2 back onto it. No need to ever upgrade to a stock firmware just for a restore.

But still, get your ECID SHSH info on file with Cydia too, that way you have 2 avenues to stay jailbroken.

I'm looking for a factory unlocked iPhone on ebay since I'm in the US. Someone I messaged said factory unlocked iPhones will die out in a year and have other software issues? Like call quality changes when moving between cities? Is this ******** or legit? Since it's just a full software unlock I can't imagine anything being effected by a factory unlocked iPhone... it's still all the same parts, isn't it?

Factory Unlocked iPhones are exactly the same iPhones sold over here by ATT and Apple except they have been sent a fancy code through iTunes.

    So, yeah, that's complete BS

Thanks for the reply. :-) I figured so but wanted to double check. In case there was something I was missing or overlooked.

Also... the phone supposedly comes with a warranty until July 2010. If I ever needed to take it in would I go to an Apple store or call AppleCare over the phone or what? Can I even get extended coverage for the phone?

Plus if I get a factory unlocked iPhone keep a look-out in the B/S/T forum for my 32gb 3GS going up for sale ;-) It's already jailbroken/unlocked (3.1.2) but with all this talk and hype I just don't want to worry about losing my unlock- ever. I could [pathetically] live without a jailbreak but the phone is completely useless if I can't unlock it, thus my interest in a factory unlocked phone.

    Thanks again!!

I don't know this for a fact, but I've read that AppleCare will only work in the country the phone was purchased in. I would make a call to Apple to verify this before I purchased a phone for as much as you're considering (just so I would know, one way or the other).

I've seen factory unlocked 32GB iphone 3GS at buy.com for 999.99 so thats one place to look for one from a mostly respectable store vs a fly by night type of place.

oh shoot, looks like it has gone up in price, its 1100 now instead of $1000
