  • In Depth Look at Apple's iBooks Author Mac Application

Apple’s education event finished up earlier today at New York City’s Guggenheim Museum where the company announced the “iBooks 2” application. This was a major update to the design which helped integrate the iPad into the school curriculum. The app also happened to be Apple’s first highlight of the event – reinventing textbooks. Schiller proceeded to introduce “iBooks Author” which is a new (and free) Mac app for authoring e-books.

According to Schiller “authors are going to love to use iBooks Author to create not only textbooks but any kind of book.” Apple’s Vice President of Productivity Software and iWork, Roger Rosner, came out on the storage to give a demonstration of the Mac app. He chose a template that ships with the program, showing off the ability to add your own photos, movies, text, and multi-touch widgets in a fashion similar to Pages.

iBooks Author even reflows text dynamically WYSIWYG-style as you drag page elements around. Furthermore, the app supports the Microsoft Word format and the app is even clever enough to automatically create sections and headers that lay out the pages automatically upon dropping a Word document onto the chapter.

Apple’s Keynote file format is also supported, allowing you to drop Keynote presentations onto your project at which point iBooks Author will turn into an interactive widget. If you are tech savvy and happen to know how to your way around HTML and Javascript, you can even code a custom widget. Other features include easy glossary creation, extended content with HTML5, and more. In addition, when your e-book is completed, you can click the Preview button and iBooks Author will take care of the rest – sending the project to your connected iPad.

The demonstration concluded with Schiller saying that the program is “the most advanced, most powerful and yet most fun interactive authoring tool yet create.” For any of you that might be interested in writing a book and utilizing this tool, Apple’s iBooks Author is a free download from the Mac App Store.
