  • Hacker demos ‘Flying JB’ Jailbreak for iOS 9.2.1

Chinese hacker Min Zheng aka @SparkZheng has published a YouTube video which demos a jailbreak for iOS 9.2.1 called Flying JB. The demo shows ‘Flying JB’ app successfully jailbreaking iPhone 5c running iOS 9.2.1. It also installs an unsigned Mobile Terminal app during the jailbreak process, which gives you the ability to run any command as root.

Zheng has also credited Cererdlong and Eakerqiu for the jailbreak. Zheng has revealed in a blog post that the Flying JB is based on inpuTbag (after the popular Prison Break character Tbag), a 15-year-old kernel HeapOverFlow vulnerability. Apple has fixed the vulnerability in iOS 9.3.2, so the jailbreak won’t work on iOS 9.3.2. Zheng has confirmed that the vulnerability was “very powerful” to exploit the iOS kernel before iOS 9.3.2. However, the jailbreak is much harder in iOS 9.3 and iOS 9.3.1 due to the “entitlements” added by Apple.

But I wouldn’t get too excited as the jailbreak only works on 32-bit devices, which means that it will work on iPhone 5 or lower running on iOS 9.2.1. It also seems like a work in progress as the sandbox escape isn’t public yet, so it is not a full jailbreak.

Unlike Pangu or TaiG jailbreak, Flying JB isn’t a GUI based tool, so jailbreaking your device wouldn’t be very easy. If you’re adventurous, then you can check out the source code on Github and follow the instructions provided to see if you can jailbreak your device. Though we would recommend holding off for now.

Another teaser. To be honest I love my jailbreak but I'm getting tired of 8.4. I can hardly install apps anymore from the AppStore since most require 9 and up. Even the Apple Store App requires 9. Just so fed up and disappointed how my phone lags and crashes. I know the iPhone 6 is capable for so much more than that. It feels like I'm limiting the phone by having a lower firmware JB on it. It's soon time to give it up and move on from it all. It's painful but got to do it without any light at the end of the JB tunnel. I should have been a programmer to be able to provide contribution instead of complaining but I'm 42 so it's kind of late [emoji23]

I hear ya, but you should've jump on 9.02 when you had the chance.

      You should try semi-restore.

I'd use Cydia Impactor. It's much more thorough.

It's probably mine. I get a few restarts throughout the day on unlocking my phone and random times. Sometimes respring and sometimes restarting.

I'm glad that I had an iPad to test out 9.0 .2 when it came out. I despised iOS 9 so much that I will gladly stay on 8.4, boring or not. Some changes are just not for the better.

My iPad mini is totally unstable on it, I imagine anything like a 5S or above will run it OK. But if it sucks on an iPad mini then it'll probably run poorly on an iPhone 4s too

I bet you have a ton of tweaks and something is having a conflict.

I tried Impactor twice with no luck. Some over the air error although I never to over the air updates. Have never tried semi-restore and there's a thread here where members have reported success.
