  • Mother Uses ‘Hey Siri’ to Call an Ambulance and Save Her 1-Year Old Daughter

Apple products aren’t strangers to getting credit when it comes to saving lives, and now Siri is seeing some of that attention, too.

As reported by the BBC, Stacey Gleeson’s one-year-old daughter, Giana, stopped breathing. When Ms. Gleeson ran into her daughter’s bedroom, she went to turn on the light and accidentally dropped her iPhone. In the busy moments that Ms. Gleeson tried to resuscitate her daughter, she called out to her phone, and told Siri to call an ambulance.

Siri did as she was instructed, and Ms. Gleeson was able to talk with emergency services as she started CPR on her daughter.

“She shouted at the handset to activate Siri and told it to get the emergency services on speakerphone as she began CPR.

Ms Gleeson told the BBC she feels it may have saved her daughter’s life.

She instructed Siri to call an ambulance on speakerphone and was able to communicate with the emergency services while resuscitating Giana.”
The incident actually took place back in March of this year, but the story didn’t go viral until Ms. Gleeson contacted Apple directly to thank them for the feature baked into the company’s smartphone. Ms. Gleeson said she had used Siri in the past, and said that she thought it was a “fun feature,” but after the events with her daughter, she says she’ll never turn it off:

“I had played around with Siri, I thought it was a fun feature. Now I have that feature turned on all the time and it will never be turned off again.”
The Apple Watch saw plenty of attention last year as a product that saved not only one man’s life, thanks to tracking his heart rate, but also a 17-year old who was complaining of an accelerated heart rate and chest pains.

I'm surprised it didn't send her a pizza instead.

I was unaware of Siri activating a call on speakerphone. Although, I've never tired it with emergency services (911 in the states), maybe that's a feature built in for this exact reason...emergencies. But if memory serves, I think I've told Siri to call my wife and even used the keyword speakerphone and she did not comply.

      ****Edit****
Disregard, just tried it and it did indeed call my wife on speaker, and the ringing woke her.

I got in trouble!! Thanks Siri!
