  • Apple’s VocalIQ Acquistion Could Help It Greatly Improve Siri This Year

Tech Insider reports VocalIQ, a company that Apple acquired last year, is going to play a key role in Siri’s upcoming upgrade. The source of the publication says that VocalIQ’s product is far superior to Google Now, Microsoft’s Cortana, and Siri, and Apple was so impressed with it that it acquired the company before it could release its app.

Apparently, in testing, VocalIQ’s product was easily able to understand long and complex user commands without tripping over. The product had a success rate of over 90 percent, while Google Now, Siri and Cortana had a success rate of around 20%.

The report also highlights one impressive feature of VocalIQ: being able to remember and understand previous contexts. So, for example, if you search for a Chinese restaurant with Wi-Fi and parking and then later change your mind to have some Mexican food, simply searching for “Find me a Mexican restaurant instead” will trigger VocalIQ’s product to bring up the relevant search results, but with Wi-Fi and parking filter applied.

Because VocalIQ understands context so well, it essentially eliminates the need to look at a screen for confirmation that it’s doing what you want it to do. That’s useful on the phone, but could be even better for other ambitious projects like the car or smart speaker system Apple is reportedly building.
It was initially believed that Apple had acquired VocalIQ for Project Titan, its first car.

The report greatly hypes up VocalIQ’s product, but it remains to be seen if Apple will be integrating all of VocalIQ’s prowess into the upcoming refresh for Siri. For Apple to take on Amazon Echo, Siri needs to be vastly improved. The company’s Amazon Echo competitor is rumored to feature a camera, and to make Siri better, the company also plans on opening up the platform to developers, which will allow them to integrate their apps and services with Siri.
