  • Apple Pulls iOS 9.3.2 Update for 9.7-Inch iPad Pro Due to Error 56 Bricking Devices

Apple has released iOS 9.3.2 to the public on May 16, after a series of beta releases. As previously reported, some 9.7-inch iPad Pro owners have been experiencing issues.

Later in the same day the software was released, many reports from owners of the 9.7-inch iPad Pro came to light, indicating that their device was getting bricked in the upgrade process. For many an “Error 56” popped up, which relates to an unknown hardware error. The support page for the error indicated that owners should try to restart the device twice, but for the majority that fix did not do anything. And if that didn’t work, the support document suggested that owners plug their device into their computer and restore it directly.

However, that did not work for many, either.

The support document’s last step in fixing the problem is to contact Apple Support, which many owners did. As a result, according to MacRumors, Apple has seen enough complaints to officially pull iOS 9.3.2 as an option for owners of the 9.7-inch iPad Pro. The report indicates that owners of the tablet are no longer seeing the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system available to download, even if they are running the previous version.

MacRumors states that they have heard owners of the 9.7-inch iPad Pro who have taken their device into an Apple Store to speak with the Genius Bar are getting their tablets replaced, and that there does not appear to be a simpler fix at hand. The iOS 9.3.2 update will not be available for 9.7-inch iPad Pro owners until Apple can fix the bug causing the issue.

For its part, Apple has acknowledged Error 56, but has only said that affected owners should contact Apple Support to reach the next step.

Update: Here’s Apple’s official comment on the matter:

“We’re working on a fix for an issue impacting a small number of iPad units that are receiving an error when trying to update the software. We’ll issue an update as quickly as possible”

What confuses me so much is why is this issue is new. I'm running 9.3.2 beta on my 9.7" pro, and haven't had any issues yet. I know they stated its a 'small number of iPad units', but how did this issue make it from the beta to the public?

It wasn’t happening in the beta, so obviously something changed. This is why Apple needs a goldmaster.

I'm wondering if it's a different manufacturer of a hardware component in that particular pad and it didn't like something..
