  • Apple Pulls Stefan Esser’s Jailbreak Detection App from the App Store

Stefan Esser aka i0n1c, a well-known hacker and security researcher, had released an app called System and Security Info that detected if your iPhone has been secretly jailbroken.

At that time, we were quite surprised that the app was approved by Apple’s App Review team.

The “System and Security Info” app was quite handy for people who are worried that their iPhone was jailbroken. It even pointed out if the device was jailbroken using jailbreak tools like Pangu, TaiG etc, and whether Cydia was installed on the device. The malware detection feature was also very useful to find out if someone gained unauthorized access to your jailbroken iPhone and installs a malware.

The app was very popular and quickly became the top paid app in the App Store.

Esser had submitted an update which fixed an issue which wrongly identified an anomaly when the accessibility features were enabled. i0n1c has just tweeted that the app has been removed his jailbreak detection from the App Store. He got an email from Apple telling him that the app was removed from the App Store for the following reasons:

2.19: Apps that provide correct diagnostic or other inaccurate device data will be rejected.

22.2: Apps that contain false, fraudulent or misleading representations or use names or icons similar to other Apps will be rejected.

i0n1c also revealed that Apple pulled the app because it was displaying the process list which was a privacy violation. But users have argued that they “should have rights to know what is running on their own device”.

i0n1c also points out that they are using the same APIs that are used by other diagnostic apps that are still available in the App Store. While we are not surprised that app has been removed from the App Store, the reasons provided by Apple for the rejection are not very convincing.

Do you think Apple is justified in removing the app from the App Store? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Maybe they should take revenge for Apple's bureaucracy and release a jailbreak for 9.2.1/9.3.2?

tell me if Im wrong but isn't this app to detect if the iPhone was jailbroken? If you get it off cydia I assume your iPhone is jailbroken...unless you want to confirm that your iPhone is jailbroken even though you know you jailbroke it...
