  • Sonyís Remote Play for playing PS4 games on Mac is launching tomorrow

The time has almost arrived for Sony which has plans to let gamers play PS4 titles on Mac. Sony has tested their 3.50 update with PS4 owners trying the beta although the pre-release version lacked Remote Play for Mac, but tomorrow that feature will be included in the public release for all PlayStation 4 owners.

Once released, Remote Play will let PS4 owners use DualShock 4 controllers to play PS4 games from the Mac. The feature sounds like an easy way to officially turn your Mac display into a second screen thatís easily portable. Hereís what you need to know from Sonyís PlayStation 4 blog post on the 3.50 system software update:

With this update, weíre expanding PS4ís Remote Play capabilities to work with Windows PC and Mac. Remote Play on PC / Mac is compatible with the following system software:

    Windows 8.1
    Windows 10 or later
    OS X 10.10
    OS X 10.11
Youíll be able to select from the following resolution and frame rate options, depending on your Internet bandwidth.

    Resolution options: 360p, 540p, 720p (Default: 540p)
Frame rate : Standard (30fps), High (60fps) (Default: Standard)
You can use one DualShock 4 as the controller for Remote Play, which needs to be connected to your PC / Mac via a USB cable.

After the system software update launches, youíll be able to download the Remote Play Installer here.
Understand that youíll need a PS4 and note that game play is limited to 720p (thatís a lot of multitasking space on a 5k iMac), but itís a big step in the right direction for the gaming experience on Mac.

[email protected]!!! I'm an Xbox guy all the way (Gamertag: TheRogueDemon). I bought a windows 10 laptop (Yoga 900) for the sole purpose to be able to play my games while not at home (hotel as I travel for work), (I put my Xbox in the DMZ baby). Everything else I own is Apple (iMac, macbook pro, and the new macbook 12' for my travels). I hope Xbox will allow Mac play soon (very highly unlikely (Mac vs. Windows)). But, i may just get the Playstation now, for this convenience. I will keep my xbox of course, but this is possibly the best move Sony has made as of late. What do y'all think?

Add Windows 10 to your mac via bootcamp to get the best of both worlds.

Why only at a max of 720P... this defeats the purpose of playing on my beautiful Mac screen.

PS4 canít consistently handle more than that.

Will we really be able to notice especially on a screen as big as a 21"?

I noticed the difference between 900p and 1080p, so Iím sure the difference between 720p and 2880p will be more than noticeable.

For certain games at low refresh rates. I can look it up for exact numbers, but if my memory serves almost all PS4 games are 900p 30fps. It needs to be lower resolution to support constant 60fps.

Freaking cool, worked perfect on my iMac and Windows 10 PC son... Resolution of course is not the same as PS4 but not a big deal when you go on vacations and stay at the hotel or waiting for your flight at the airport playing your PS4 from your PC or Mac.

I tried it but it looks horrible. I'll stick to the tv for game play.

It requires a wifi network right? So how would that work? And you take your PS4 console when you travel?

Sony wants to limit quality to 720p because the new ps4.5 will be able to handle 4k gaming.
