  • FBI requests court delay iPhone encryption motion citing new unlock method

In a last minute request, the DOJ on Monday asked a federal court to vacate a hearing scheduled for Tuesday regarding a motion to compel Apple assistance in the FBI's San Bernardino investigation, saying an outside party has come forward with a potential iPhone unlocking method.

According to a court filing, an unnamed party on Sunday demonstrated a method for unlocking an iPhone tied to San Bernardino terror suspect Syed Rizwan Farook. With a working decryption workaround in hand, the FBI does not need to compel Apple's assistance in the case.

"On Sunday, March 20, 2016, an outside party demonstrated to the FBI a possible method for unlocking [terrorist Syed] Farook's iPhone," the Justice Department writes. "Testing is required to determine whether it is a viable method that will not compromise data on Farook's iPhone. If the method is viable, it should eliminate the need for the assistance from Apple Inc. ("Apple") set forth in the All Writs Act Order in this case."

Politico reported on the motion earlier today.

Apple is at the center of a contentious debate over digital encryption that pits user privacy and civil rights against national security. The company was in February ordered by a federal magistrate judge to help the FBI unlock an iPhone linked to San Bernardino terror suspect Syed Rizwan Farook. Fulfilling the order entails the creation of an iOS variant vulnerable to brute-force attacks, a forensics tool needed to bypass Farook's four-digit passcode.

Imagine that, there are actually people out there that can hack into an iPhone.

      Who knew!

Translation for those that don't speak legal jargon, here's what the FBI just said: We got caught with our pants down, the public called us out on it and rather than continue down this PR nightmare, it is much easier to pay a hacker to hack the iPhone than force Apple to do it.

Although it's probably a long-shot, I hope the judge doesn't grant the request. The FBI and the government at large need to be told they cannot have everything they want, just by asking for it and trying to scare the masses into submission. The all-writs argument is a load of fertilizer, and they know it. But they'll continue to use it against Apple (and others) until there has been a definitive ruling.

I love my country, but I fear my government. Now more than ever.

He's probably the one who is paying the hacker. That will likely be the same hacker who will hack the ballots for Trump...

@Caiden Spencer, Rakim: How the hell did Trump come into this? We don't need every thread being turned into platforms for pushing political views on others. It's even worse when you take the demeanor that your views are some how definitive, that it's some how most people feel.

Caiden is from Australia, so his political comments about US politics aren't really pushing an agenda.

@King_O_Hill: It really doesn't matter where he is from. He is pushing a view on others, which has nothing to do with this thread. He clearly took the opportunity to use the thread to do so, which is very inappropriate, especially given that he is representing this site as a writer. It just simply had and has no place in a thread (or site) such as this. If I want to get into political discussions, there are far better places for it.

Seeing this topic involves the government and if you look at the last sentence that he replied too, his comment might be a little obscure, but it's not inappropriate. You make it sound like it sparked a 20 page political debate when the only one that it bothered was you!

This is a discussion forum & my response was related to the topic of the original subject matter..... That subject matter being HACKING... HACKING being done by HACKERS who are HACKING the iOS platform for the FBI like a HACKER or HACKERS would naturally do....HACK things, and since this article was about HACKERS HACKING the iOS platform for the FBI so that Apple wouldn't have to HACK their own platform I think the only platform or agenda or view which was pushed by me was an opinion that the HACKERS are probably HACKING on behalf of Trump, and those same HACKERS who are being paid to HACK iOS for the FBI are probably willing to HACK the ballots on his behalf also... And since the reply Caiden posted was made clearly as a pun without any solicitation for support implied within, I think it's not "pushing" AnyThing at all by the definition of the word "Push".... I simply stuck to the topic of HACKERS HACKING, with a vague reply which was related to said topic...Soooo yea, if you took it as pushing any specific opinion or platform I think that's kind of your thing... And probably your own delicate political sensibilities being in a state of uproar caused by your own thought processes. But heyyyy I digress, since this is a a discussion forum I'd dare say your idea of NOT DISCUSSING opinions is kind of moot round these here parts buddy....

So in light of that I've taken the liberty above ^^^ to be sure To include a very generous application of the subject matter vocabulary within my post so as not to offend you or cause you to believe I was somehow HACKING away at the original intention or platform if you will, of the OP by speaking of any inappropriate topics in this thread.....

OR Apple is having an "outsider" do it to remain disconnected from it all.

Possible, hell anything is possible. I think Apple is staying away from it for ethics reasons as well as security concerns , I'd like to believe that they wouldn't stage such a grand & costly performance of resistance only to secretly do the very thing they've so vehemently refused publicly....
