  • Oculus VR founder says they won’t support Mac until Apple ‘releases a good computer’
    .
Oculus is waiting on Apple to release a "good" Mac with a faster video card before it considers supporting the Rift VR headset on OS X, according to Oculus founder Palmer Luckey.
    .

"If they ever release a good computer, we will do it," Luckey said to Shacknews at a Microsoft Xbox press event.

"It just boils down to the fact that Apple doesn't prioritize high-end GPUs," he explained. "You can buy a $6,000 Mac Pro with the top of the line AMD FirePro D700, and it still doesn't match our recommended specs. So if they prioritize higher-end GPUs like they used to for a while back in the day, we'd love to support Mac. But right now, there's just not a single machine out there that supports it."

The Rift, shipping March 28, already pushes the performance boundaries of mid- to high-level Windows PCs, requiring at least an Intel Core i5-4590 processor, and an Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD R9 290 card for graphics. Computer bundles with the headset included start at $1,499.

The GTX 970 and R9 290 are full-sized graphics cards, whereas most Macs — even top-end iMacs — use weaker mobile processors in the interests of saving space, cost, and/or power consumption.

Oculus officially "paused" work on Mac support last May. In January Luckey made similarly pessimistic comments about the Mac, saying that support is "on the roadmap post-decent Apple hardware release, whenever that is."

The whole "get what you pay for" certainly doesn't apply to Apple products. Buying Apple is like buying a handbag from Target but with a Louis Vuitton logo on it.

Well that's funny, because I have no I intention of buying a $1,500 gaming accessory that doesn't even have any games or other software!

People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. And I'm sure Apple couldn't give two shits about Oculous Rift and its microscopic potential customer base.

I guess you haven't even seen the true cost of a LV bag to know how out of whack and hyperbolic your metaphor is.

You know whats funny... Apples fron 2008 are still working with nowadays OSX. You do that with a windows pc and you're stuck. Macs are not made for playing games, but for more serious things. And Oculus is already history. There are better VR tools coming out next months so stop ******** like you own the market.

You don't have to be an Apple fanboy to understand that the statement is complete BS.

Except it isn’t. Macs aren’t made for gaming. They simply don’t have high end GPUs because that isn’t what they’re made for. He isn’t saying Macs are high quality or something like that, he’s saying no Mac is a powerful enough gaming machine to handle the requirements of VR.

My fastest cpu and gpu is in my dual G5 titanium tower. Unfortunately there are no apps or games for it. My fastest PC is an asus mb, it's not even close to being as fast despite an oc'd AMD 4400+ cpu.

Why don't they build the graphics power into the oculus negating the need for a powerful computer?

I don’t think you realize how large and hot a GPU gets.

Edit: I looked it up and the smallest 970 is 8 inches long. The oculus is 7 inches long.

Would have to use multiple thunderbolt connections and have 250W-350W of power on tap to make that work. It's not simple to have external high-powered graphics. And yes, I have experience with eGPUs.

In that case, I would say VR is not yet ready for prime time.

According to Oculus themselves, only heavy duty gaming computers will support that thing anyway. So let's see…
$1500 for the headset. Another $1500-2000 for the souped-up gaming computer. That's quite an expensive hobby!

Come back when I can buy the whole thing for maybe 500 bucks, and without having to buy a ridiculously expensive computer to support it.

Yes dumb dumb, I see the cost of one every time my wife buys one! I know it's comments like these that really stress you fanboys out so maybe you should go take a breather then come back and rethink it because the only thing outa wack in here is your stupid reply.

Don't they though? Fanboys are the reason the saying "The Truth Hurts" exist!

Duh everyone knows that! Macs are made for browsing the internet and syncing your device with iTunes. When people really need to get something done they use a PC, hence the reason why you'll never walk into a Bank or a corporation and see a Mac sitting around!

*Waiting for the "I can run Windows on my Mac" comments. Yes fanboys we know, we can run OS X on our PC's as well. Only difference is you guys have about 1000 reason why you need to run Windows on your Mac. PC users have 0 reasons to run OS X on our PC's.

Why do PC fanboys troll Apple websites? My guess is they feel inferior, so they come here to try to brag. I used Windows for many, many years. Now you couldn't pay me to go back to Windows. NO WAY!!!

Microsoft could be giving away Windows computers, but I wouldn't take one.

P.S. Windows 10 won't have any of the problems Windows 8 had. Trust me.

You would have to essentially include a high end graphics card with the headset increasing the price dramatically.

Can't talk about others but I for one love my iPhone and hate my Mac. Just too damn slow compared to my Windows machine.

And I come here for iPhone related news. Not Mac related news. This is ModMyi not ModMyM.
