  • [RUMOR] Apple to debut OLED iPhone in 2017
    .
On Wednesday reports claim that Apple is planning to produce OLED display technology in its iPhone lineup in 2017, a year earlier than previous estimates, though the new screen technology will be limited to certain high-end models due to initial supply constraints.

Sources say they are familiar with Apple's business dealings, the company reached out to South Korean display suppliers LG and Samsung in December to discuss the viability of ramping up OLED production in time for next year's iPhone launch, Nikkei reports. Along with the two tech companies, Apple also informed the appropriate industry associations of the potential change.

Apple is expected to take advantage of OLED's unique properties, specifically the ability to conform with curved handset designs, but the report claims the last minute decision to launch in 2017 leaves those prospects in limbo. Manufacturers don't have enough time to ensure panel reliability in conjunction with a potentially unconventional design, and Apple wants to bring OLED to market as soon as possible, the report said.

Apple is supposedly looking to OLED to offset a predicted stall in iPhone sales, though current analyst projections don't anticipate a plateau in 2017. In any case, the company built conditions into its contracts with panel makers that allow for timeline adjustments, facilitating an earlier-than-expected start.

Last November, Nikkei was among the first publications to report on iPhone's rumored switch to OLED, saying at the time that indications pointed to a 2018 debut with the iPhone 8. Subsequent rumors seemingly corroborated those claims, adding that existing LCD panel suppliers LG and Samsung would be responsible for initial orders. Apple Watch display supplier LG, for example, is pumping serious capital into a buildout of its OLED facilities.

Sharp is also said to be developing its own OLED operation, though a protracted Foxconn takeover process could postpone such investments.

Apple usually reserves major component changes for numbered iPhone releases, such as this year's expected iPhone 7 redesign, though the company did integrate an entirely new 3D Touch subsystem in the "off year" iPhone 6s. Despite reports to the contrary, noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a solid track record when it comes to predicting Apple's product pipeline, said he doesn't expect iPhone to go OLED until 2019.

It's about time they catch up with Samsung. I can't stand Android but Samsung hardware is light years ahead of Apple. Maybe they'll add wireless charging in 2018. GO APPLE!

Samsung might be light years ahead, but Apple do it right, with mostly everything they do. They make it better. This is the reason why you see Apple Stores full, this is the reason why many people enjoy iOS over Android phones. GO APPLE!

Apple do it right? Yeah that's why they pretty much hold the world record for most firmware updates for a smartphone because "they do it right"

The only thing I see the Apple store full of is idiots sitting at the Genius Bar waiting for their Genius Appointment so that they can ask stupid questions like "how do I send a picture message from my iPhone, or how do I transfer photos from my iPhone to my computer, or how come the battery life of my Apple Watch sucks?. Funny how Apple users boast about how super simple Apple products are to use yet the Apple Stores are always filled with the idiots who can't seem to figure it out.

Like seriously, I own an iPhone myself but at least I'm not shallow enough to not be able to admit when another device is clearly better.

      So yeah, GO FANBOY!

Ohh wait I see, you're the one who wrote this article. No wonder you're salty

Okay. I'm not admitting that another device is clearly better. I'm saying apple do not innovate, they strive to make their hardware and software better than Samsung. Simple as that.

Most updates because when a bug is noticed it gets fixed.

Weren't the last couple of iPhone iterations rumored to have OLED screens?

Also why the hell would you want a screen that has issues with image burn? The last thing I want, is to have a clock/menubar/icons burned into my screen. I've had a TV that usually ended up with some sort of life meter burned into the corner of the screen, I wouldn't want this with a phone.

More accurate colours at the cost of ruining the screen is not progress!

As long as Apple can somehow make it non-oversaturated like other OLED devices. That crap bugs the hell out of me.

3 of the phones on display in the Samsung section of my Best Buy have image burn issues. Every different employee I've asked about it just shrugs their shoulders and moves on.

I don't know why comments about apple watches battery life bother me so bad but they do... I can actively use my watch and get two whole days and part of a third on one charge... What's wrong with that? That's some lame first world complaining, "Apple watches suck, you have to charge them every day or every other day." When I was younger I could go through a new pack of 4 AA batteries in one day on my game boy, or 2 AA's on a walkman or discman and I never heard anyone complain of poor battery life, that was just the reality... I've seen and heard so many people over the years say things like "Maybe the next iphone will have a better battery." I get two active days on a full charge on a 6 plus and that's still not good enough for some...

I have a galaxy tab 3, use the IR to control everything. Samsung android devices have been easy to root, easy to flash, and they handle memory better than most other Droids.

That's the one thing that android can't touch, Apple handles ram much better. On cheap droids, you can only install 3 apps before your system storage is filled. So then you use Aparted to create a swap partition and then links2SD to move your apps into SD storage, only the apps crash after you link or move them to SD.

It's always a balancing app with apps on droid, but you don't have a sandbox to piddle in that keeps you out of other sandboxes.

I think Apple peaked with the iPhone 6/Plus and iOS 8.3, iOS 9 has been a big letdown, not impressed with Farce-Touch. iOS 9 has made my iPad unusable, it was great in iOS 8.3/4.

Wireless charging is pointless and redundant. If you pick your phone up for any reason, it's not charging. If I pick up my charging iPhone, it's still charging! Ta Da!

Pointless? No dude Siri is pointless! 3D Touch is Pointless! Yet there are still people out there who find them CONVENIENT! Wireless charging is convenient! When I'm sitting at my desk I can just lay my phone on the charge pad and it will charge. I don't have to reach for a stupid cable, plug it in have it dangling around my all up in my way! If I need to use my phone I simply pick it up, do what I need to do, lay it back down and it goes back to charging again! Ta Da!

Yeah.. Wireless charging is far from pointless. Will be awesome.. That is if it doesn't give us all brain cancer from all the electromagnetic fields swimming around our brains at our desk. You'd be surprised to know the output of those things.. Yikes.

I canít tell if youíre talking about apple watch battery life or not, but I consistently go 18 hour days with over 50% battery life on mine.

Lying would be making something up, sharing my real battery results is a true experience for me... Now if I used Facebook or Instagram and had notifications on for every little whatever from every app than my results would be far worse... I remove my apple watch from the charger around 8 am every Morning, every night when I go to bed and I put it on the charger around midnight the battery is at 55% on a busy day and 67-72% on a slower day... It's all about settings and notifications and how you have it all configured... With my 6 plus, I get home and put my phone on charge around midnight and it's usually in the 60% range... I use my phone and watch all day every day, just not for heavy battery drainer social media apps....

If you'd like I could help you troubleshoot and figure ways to drastically improve your battery life...

I like it when the Droid fanboys come here to knock Apple. Funny, I don't go visit the Droid forums looking for something to do. Oh yeah, that's right, I like my Apple devices and don't see the need to go there and bash what they like.
