  • HBO Now App subscriptions at 800,000
    .
    Launching almost a year ago with a publicity boost by Apple, HBO Now currently has just 800,000 subscribers, Network CEO says.

    Richard Plepler commented during a Time Warner results call;

    "I wouldn't say only 800,000 subs," "We're just getting started... I think we're going to make a lot of progress."
    Until today the service's subscriber numbers were kept out of the public eye, possibly because HBO was anticipating more rapid adoption. U.S. audiences are increasingly turning to Internet-only video and abandoning cable and satellite TV, which are still HBO's lifeblood.

    It's unknown whether HBO might be included in Apple streaming bundle rumored for later this year, but the network is already available through some other streaming providers, such as Sling TV.

      That's "only" 800,000 people who were not subscribing to HBO before that. "Only" ~11 million dollars a month that they didn't have before... "Only" ~130 million dollars a year which they were missing out on previously...

      You are assuming "new subscriber" some people like me was on cable and using HBO Go, but because I have problem with cable company keep changing plan because my "special pricing" expired I cancelled it and subscribe on HBO Now.
      HBO would have my money no matter what, and I plan on going back to HBO cable just for that extra option of watching without using internet.
      I do prefer cable HBO + HBO Go because I have 2 ways to access HBO for same price, for now I am on just HBO Now...
      Anyways I plan on talking to my cable company to see what they can do to get this business back from me, once I find out HBO Now will be down to 799,999.

      Good luck with "talking" to your cable company. When we left Cox after being with them for years and paying an almost monthly $200 bill they had no interest at all in listening to why we were leaving, working with us or even trying to keep our business. Now we receive mailers every week trying to entice us to come back. Cable companies are run by morons. As long as Century Link or its successors exist I will never go back to Cox out of pure spite.
