  • It's Official: Apple Pay is Coming to China

Following months of rumors and speculation, the news was finally confirmed early Friday morning in China.

Apple Pay is coming to the world's largest mobile community. Late Thursday in the U.S., Apple issued a news release confirming what the people of China learned as they started their morning.

Apple and China UnionPay have finalized a partnership that will allow China UnionPay cardholders to easily add their bank cards to Apple Pay on iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad. The service is expected to go live for Chinese consumers in early 2016.

“China UnionPay is dedicated to promoting payment innovations and providing secure, convenient mobile payment experiences for its hundreds of millions of cardholders, aligning multiple parties in the industry,” said Chai Hongfeng, executive vice president of China UnionPay. “We’re very excited to offer Apple Pay among a diverse set of innovative payment options that work with China UnionPay QuickPass.”

The story is still developing and no formal comments by Apple or UnionPay have been made beyond the press release that just hit the wire. To read Apple's formal announcement, click here.
