  • iFixit Team Tears Down Apple's New Controversial Smart Battery iPhone 6/6s Case

The iFixit team has gotten its hands on yet another one of Apple's new accessories. After recently tearing down the Smart Keyboard and the Apple Pencil, iFixit's latest teardown has to do solely with the new Smart Battery Case for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s.

The case has been controversial from critics because of its weird, bulgy design, but Apple boss Tim Cook recently stood behind the product, talking more about its design and explaining why it is the way it is. Nonetheless, iFixit doesn't care they just want to rip the thing open and see what's inside.

While tearing down the Apple smart battery case, iFixit found that it was very difficult to replace anything in the entire accessory except for the battery. The battery was even difficult to remove, due to loads of adhesive, but was still do-able. There is a logic board inside of the case that controls the power in and power out, but the meat and potatoes of the case is the 7.13 Whr (1877 mAh at 3.8 V) capacity lithium-ion battery, which more than doubles the capacity of the existing 6.55 Whr iPhone 6s battery.

Removing other parts involves breaking a ton of things, so one thing that's for sure is that this isn't something that Apple intends to repair, or that users will really want to repair, but instead, would be far better off replaced if something goes wrong. iFixit is giving the $99.00 case a 2 out of 10 repairability score just because the battery can be removed and replaced.

Agreed! You know what they say about opinions. I posted this on FB and it got good reviews. I like it and will get one for my plus if they make it. I'm getting one of these for Dad's 6 for Xmas.

Uhm... I have a smart battery case that I paid 50% less for and has more capacity, considerably more than double the capacity I had.. I can use it heavily all day and still have 100% battery when I plug it in at night.. it shuts off automatically when the battery is charged... I've had it for a long time and it's not bulging out like Apple's ... I'll pass

The only downside to the case I have is that I charge it with a mini-usb instead .. but that's really a non-issue for me personally.. the point is that there are many better cases out there with higher capacity and lower cost and better design.

Can someone tell me what the controversy is behind this? I've seen so much fuss over it and I still have no idea why.

It's not like they're forcing you to get one with each phone.

I've had Mophie cases before for my older phones. Generally speaking, they are some of the best battery cases out there, if not the best and most reliable. The only complain I have about them is the stupid micro USB port to charge them. I refused to buy a case for my iPhone 6 for that very reason. My car doesn't have bluetooth audio streaming, only phone calls, so my iPhone needs to connect via the iPod 30-pin cable with Lightning adapter for music in my car. (thanks BMW)

If I had a battery case, I would have to remove it every time i got in my car, and that would get annoying fast. I have a battery pack, but kinda sucks having to carry it around with 2 cables whenever I know i'm gonna need it.

Sure, is not the best looking case out there, but this Apple battery case is perfect for me. I only need one lightning cable to charge it. I don't have to remove it to use it in my car or with any other lightning docks. Battery capacity is not huge, but plenty for me to get by for my needs. I will most likely be getting it soon.

Now if Mophie or another company comes out with a case with much larger capacity WITH a lightning port and pass thru technology, I'll def buy one from them. I've only seen one other such case on Amazon but with no reviews.

Mophie has a much better case with a better design, more features, half the price, etc. the only thing this case has going for it is the Lightning port. That's it.

Mophie is NOT half the price, it's $69 vs $99 for the Apple case. Lightning port is a big feature, not only does it allow you to use only one cable to charge, it can also sync and work with aftermarket docks and anywhere else a lightning cable can be used. That's a pretty big deal IMO.
