  • Apple's Tim Cook Talks About the Design of the New iPhone 6/6s Smart Battery Case

Just a couple of days ago, Apple launched a new smart battery case for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s that can be used to extend the battery life of the device. The smart battery case, which retails for $99.00, has been given some criticism for its design, which looks odd because there's a 'hump' in the middle of the case for the battery.

Apple's CEO Tim Cook has commented about the design of the smart battery case in an interview with Mashable, where he says, "You know, I probably wouldn't call it 'the hump.'"

    Quote Originally Posted by Mashable
"If you make this solid all the way across," said Cook, indicating the spots where the Apple case's embedded battery stops and you just have the soft fluoroelastomer casing, "in order to get it on, you'd find it very difficult to get it on and off."

"So the guys had this great insight to put the bend in along with making it a smart case," Cook explained.
Cook notes that the flexibility of the case makes it easier to take on and off of the iPhone than competing battery cases for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s, but also notes that this probably isn't something that you would need all the time. Instead, for times when you might not have access to power, such as on camping trips, you would use this case to stay connected.

The Apple smart battery case can provide an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s user with up to 25 additional hours, depending on how it's being used.

I went to the store to check it out. I am more bummed out about the cheap rubber, the weird feel to the touch than the size. The size is actually really thin compared to other products out there. It's also one piece which is a plus. However, the only way to design it to be one piece is to make it rubber. But there's rubber and there's cheap rubber.

I bought it when it first came out.. It needs a shut off button or something.. If not its always charging the battery and slowly dying :/ I love that you can charge it with the same iPhone thunderbolt cable other tha switching to a micro Usb like other cases such as the Mophie ..

Tim Cook has lost his marbles. I really miss Steve Jobs' innovation days. I'd rather have a slightly thicker iPhone with a better battery life... I think many would want that. But now that this is in the market, Apple will most probably design even thinner phone with a pathetic battery life. iOS is the only thing that keeps me from switching to Android. The hardware is mostly sh*t compared to other droid smartphones. I'm quite sure Apple has schematics/prototypes of iPhones for the next decade with minute spec bumps... not worth upgrading every year. Maybe every 3 years now. The spec bumps from iPhone 1, 2, 3G, 4, 4S, 5, 5S were quite significant. Now its all too saturated. Force Touch too seems like a gimmick, activating it with force is not all that easy. The JB tweak does the job way better but of course its not as functional as the Force Touch.
The rumored smaller iPhone 7 too is going to be a flop show if it comes out with a plastic back and last gen specs. I guess Apple didnt learn anything after the 5C debacle.

Most people would gladly opt for a phone that is thicker which has a higher capacity battery instead of shaving tenths of mm off the thickness.

I would prefer an extra mm or so thicker and an extra 50% to 100% added to the capacity than a removable battery pack which is significantly bulkier for the same capacity increase.

The spec bumps from the 4 to the 4s were very minute, Siri was their selling point of the iphone 4s not the hardware. The real question is, do you still own an Iphone even with all of these issues you speak of? If so, Apple still wins and that's the bottom line.

ITT people are pissed off because a battery case doesn't "look pretty".. Are you guys kidding me? It's not your everyday case.. It's something you use when you're going somewhere that you know you'll need more juice (theme park, etc etc). Charge it up, slap it on, and stop worrying about your phone and how fashionable it looks. If you don't like it, don't buy it, buy another company's because they're just as ugly.

This is FUGLY. But besides this point, how about you stop trying to make a phone 0.5 mm thinner and give us more battery life. No need for a thinner iphone than what it is now (and I would recon that it is already too thin if you need to add this horrible beast to make it work). Stupid, really stupid.

It's perfect for what it's designed for. Quick on and off. Extra battery. Minimalist design. I'll get one for my plus if they bring one out!

It's Apple they design ergonomic and asthetically appealing, not ugly and semi useless. whats the point of it being a case if you don't use it all the time.

Apple products are just that, fashionable

Edit: there having some design malfunctions, lately

the mouse you can't use when charging:

      Make your iPad a lolypop

and now this, cammel back or hunch back

Edit: some interesting reading for you
