  • Apple's Remote App for iOS and watchOS Now Compatible with Apple TV tvOS 9.1

With the recent release of tvOS 91, Apple finally added support for Apple’s official Remote app, for both iOS devices as well as the Apple Watch. The support finally offers alternative Apple TV input methods aside from the previously painstaking method of using the Siri Remote. Users who update their fourth-generation Apple TV to tvOS 9.1 will discover that their set-top box is accessible via their Apple Remote app. Once connected, users can swipe on their iPhone or Apple Watch display to navigate the new Apple TV.

As you might have guessed, the tvOS 9.1 update brings support for virtual keyboard input on an iPhone or iPad. This move makes text entry when doing activities such as searching the App Store much easier than it was before. When a text field is now opened on the Apple TV, the Remote app on an iPhone will display an empty field and virtual keyboard for typing. To make things even easier, the currently-opened app is also named at the top of the screen so users can identify where their text input is being entered. Users are given the option to hide the virtual keyboard if they rather navigate instead. If a keyboard entry option remains, a small keyboard icon will be displayed in the upper left corner of the app for users to re-access it.

For those of you who didn’t already know, many users discovered that the new Apple TV was incompatible with Apple’s own Remote app for iOS and watchOS when the fourth-generation set top box launched towards the end of October. As a result, users had to rely on the TV remote and what was otherwise a poor on-screen user experience to type anything into any text fields. The recent update helps to remedy the situation finally bring convenience back to the Apple TV experience.

This makes me really happy to see... Got the new apple tv and was disappointed that the remote app didn't work with it... The new remote is awesome but the remote app is fun to use, especially with my apple watch...

Well, the biggest issue here, is that they need to update the app first, not to make an OS version compatible with an old and non-functional app. They need to work the other way around, to make the app work with Apple Music and so on. This is Apple at it's worst

I heard somewhere that you have to have 9.1 on your phone to get it to work with the new AppleTV. true?

True unfortunately. I'm hoping a jailbreak comes soon so I can get off 9.0.2.

I'm sure they'll follow up with an update to the remote app soon... You are correct though about getting the app ready first.

They need to hire some more jailbreak tweak developers, everything about Apple is backwards.

I just googled because I couldn't remember where I saw it. Apparently you just need 9.1 to be able to set up the new AppleTV using an iOS device. That's nowhere near as big an issue.

"Aside from these changes, iOS 9.1 includes new features and compatibility updates for upcoming Apple products like the fourth-generation Apple TV and the iPad Pro The new Apple TV requires iOS 9.1 to be set up using an iOS device."
