  • Apple Posts Two New Profiles to its "iPad in Education" Subsite

Apple recently posted two new profiles on its “iPad in Education” subsite as part of the company’s ongoing campaign to promote the use of its tablet in arts and science classrooms. The first profile highlights the Philadelphia Performing Arts, which is a K-12 charter school that is also involved in STEM (science, tech, engineering, math). The second profile focuses on Jodie Deinhammer who teaches anatomy and physiology at the Coppell Independent School District in Texas.

In addition to Apple-created apps such as iTunes U and the iWork suite, the Philadelphia Performing Arts school also makes use of third-party apps such as the augmented reality title, Elements 4D, to help educate the children. Deinhammer from the Coppell Independent School District in Texas leverages apps such as BioDigital Human and interactive textbooks from iBooks including her very own Health: Inside Out.

Apple has worked intensely to market the iPad to schools in all 17 profiles on its educational site. The Cupertino California company is emphasizing that the iPad makes teaching both easier and novel. The extra effort comes after Apple suffered a high profile failure with the LA Unified School District last year. Furthermore, there appears to be an increasingly tough competition in the market from devices such as Chromebooks, which can be cheaper for schools to not only buy but also maintain.

We’ll have to wait and see how Apple’s education initiative works out in the future.
