  • Nintendo Set to Debut its First Smartphone App Dubbed "Miitomo" in March of 2016

Nintendo recently announced “Miitomo,” a freemium app that is schedule to see its release in March of 2016. The news comes after the company previously announced that it would produce mobile titles for smartphones such as the iPhone earlier this year. The game was announced during an investors conference in Tokyo. Many were expecting a gaming release but according to The Wall Street Journal, the upcoming title is more of a communications app instead.

In Miitomo, users can design their own “Mii” avatars, a feature which was introduced with the Wii console years ago and talk to other app users. According to Shinya Takahashi, the app’s mechanics will push for users to open up about themselves though gameplay wasn’t discussed. What was revealed was that Nintendo plans to market in-app purchases somehow within the app offering.

What the public does know as of right now is that Miitomo is the first of five mobile apps that Nintendo is developing for release by March 2017. The first app was originally set to launch at the end of 2015 but CEO Tatsumi Kimishima mentioned that the company needed more time for proper promotion and ended up delaying the release.

The gaming giant also announced a new membership service called My Nintendo for storing character and game data in the cloud. The feature is set to allow users to be able to migrate files and other online assets between both mobile operating systems and consoles, all while a built-in-communications module will enable users to chat with one another online.

We’ll have to wait and see how Nintendo’s foray into mobile pans out for the company. It is a crucial point for the company which has been otherwise been lagging behind its competitors in the console gaming industry. One thing is for sure, users aren’t too happy to see something like Miitomo as opposed to a first-party franchise game that includes something more on the Mario-side of things.

Seriously? Who would choose this to be their first game on iOS?

To all who are shouting bloody murder for this being their first app, you have to remember that social network space is VERY lucrative in terms of iap and ad revenue. I know we all want our classics ported over (& hopefully we will one day see that), but Nintendo is playing this smart and not gonna disregard it's handheld gaming platforms
